Heh...something obvious
but I always have this difficult to resist urge to point out blatant hypocrisy.

Apparently it is ok to poke fun at certain religions on DU but not others.

What makes scientology any more ridiculous than mormon or christianity in general for that matter?

Is anybody else here old...

Er, does anybody else remember the huge $cientology wars back around 1995-96 in the Usenet group alt.religion.$cientology?

The bastids tried everything to shut that group down. One ISP owner posted a message about people dropping in on him, paying for accounts in cash, then disappearing until their thousands of spam-posts started showing up with his address attached.

At one point, the $ciento lawyer in L.A. wrote an e-mail threatening the entire government of China with legal action because some of their "sacred writings" were being hosted on a Chinese server. I think the Chinese govt. said "WTF" and ignored her.

Then The Clam Cult went after the Dutch free-lance writer Karen Spaink and her ISP, xs4all.

Big mistake. That landed the fools in a Dutch court. As I remember, that court eventually ruled that $cientology was a money-making scam and not a religion. (So did the German courts.)

At the end of the Dutch court case, they came out into the Amsterdam dusk to see their "sacred writings" being projected on the sides of buildings with overhead projectors.

Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 09:43 PM by onager
Yes, I think I do have such a lobe. Unfortunately I can't remember stuff like my own phone number or the movie I watched 2 nights ago...

However, a.r.s. wasn't really "their" group. But they sure tried to turn it into that, once they learned that victims/survivors of the cult were posting there. And they went ballistic about the "sacred writings" being posted. A lot of this is kinda fuzzy after all this time, but as I remember the Netcom ISP got hauled into court and lost a case about their Sacred Writings being hosted.

At the height of the madness, they even had sock-puppets posting to alt.atheism with pro-$cientology rants.

That didn't last long.

12. You'd BETTER be taking notes.
I want this terrible injustice documented.
DU has special rules protecting some religions but not the poor poor maligned scientologists.
Where is your COMPASSION ?

15. you aren't defending it dear friend
you are merely pointing out the hypocrisy and our new word for the week selective bashing.

on another note I am trying to find a good secular definition of a cult
because as I see it or read it that is how you would define them all

20. I said it elsewhere and I'll say it here:
Scientology is to other religions like Fred Phelps is to other Southern Baptists.

A difference in degree, actually, They're just MORE harmful and insane than most others.
