Taking the nation by storm
After the President suggested that Intelligent Design should be taught in schools along with evolution, I started paying more attention to the possible “intelligent” designers of the universe. Until recently it seemed that the Pastafarian theory (the universe was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or FSM) was in the forefront, but a new theory has emerged and is taking the nation by storm: the universe was designed by SimGod as a SimUniverse, so called because the theory allegedly has many parallels with the popular computer game, SimCity (although I believe it has more parallels to the ant farm kits popular among nerdy kids).

This theory posits that the universe was actually designed by a young deity as a game in which certain parameters were set and the universe populated, and the game set in motion. SimGod then sat back and watched the universe evolve for a few eons, but eventually lost interest and moved on to other pursuits, which no one has been able to identify. So, in essence, we were designed and put in motion as a lark by a nerdy god with a short attention span; we’re nothing more than a god’s toy run amok.

This theory fits most of what we know about the universe, and the evolution and eventual behavior of man and beast. I predict it will soon be taught in schools all over the country along with the FSM and evolution.

This is getting interesting, kiddies.

<hey, it's Saturday night>

I wonder how they would react to old Epicurus?

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?
-- Epicurus (341-270 BC)

On edit: This is one of my favorite quotes from the guys in the funny white robes. Excuse me if I post it too much. :-)

2. Aha!
That explains SimGod's loss of interest in our universe in about 265 BC!

<this is the first time I've read that quote so obviously it hasn't been posted too often. Wish I had known of it years ago when my family was still trying to save my soul>

3. I first heard it
On Jonathan Millers' A Rough History of Disbelief. This was a 3 part BBC program. Very highly recommended.

I don't think it's out on DVD (wish it was). However, if you go iso hunting you may spy some torrents of it out there.

8. I think it's pretty magnanimous
of the FSM to allow these other deities to be discussed.

9. Magnanimous = large animal?
I've been on DU since 2002 and that's the first time I've seen magnanimous used in a sentence. Your succinct phraseology is munificent BMUS.
