You'd think John Kerry was the Antichrist, wouldn't you? Sheesh.

By the way, for what it's worth, tonight's evening news on our local NBC affiliate way up here in Alaska mentioned Kerry's comment yesterday (in context), mentioned that some people were miffed about it, but then showed almost the entire clip of his rebuttal. Nothing of Bush's bullshit, nothing of Tony Snow. Just pure Kerry. It was a beautiful thing.

Don't let 'em get you down. John Kerry will always be a hero of mine.

2. Well put.
And in keeping with the upbeat note, BlueMassGroup has a positive post up too (after an earlier, nasty one): http://www.bluemassgroup.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=4933

Some of the comments are gross, not to mention the front page of tomorrow's Herald (ack).

Kerry's Lemonade

Yeah, so John Kerry appparently botched his punchline about how being ignorant leads you to make stupid mistakes like getting into Iraq. Whatever.

But I gotta say, I disagree with David about the proper approach going forward: "Apologize and move on." Well, it's not that easy, is it? Sure, John can move on with a song in his heart, but do you think BushCo and their obedient hyenas will let that happen? "Right-o, old sport -- take a mulligan. All in jolly good fair play and all that." What do you think?

So Kerry's response has been the right one: Up the ante. Everything, but everything is an opportunity. Now the media's paying attention to him, and now he gets to talk about Iraq. And after all, his gaffe doesn't matter in the big swing of things. 103 American deaths in Iraq this month alone -- they matter. A projected total cost of between one and two trillion dollars for Iraq and Afghanistan? That matters. Weakening America's security? That matters. Consistently lying to the public? That matters.

I mean, shouldn't we be willing and able to go against the likes of Tony Snow? What the hell are we afraid of at this point? What does Kerry have to lose at this point? Please don't tell me "dignity, always dignity" -- on the national level, that went out years ago. Apologies are appropriate when you're dealing with people of good faith, which the national GOP currently is not. Right now, a week before the midterms, the best defense is a good offense.

Use the attention to give 'em both barrels, John. Keep it up.

4. I don't know because I work at home...
...but I was very pleased to see that our local news guys and girls didn't buy into the hype.

5. More BS in LBN and Reuters.
They call his comment about being sorry about a "botched job" an apology. And of course, some complain he is spineless.

6. I hate what they do to John Kerry...
No matter what he does, nobody is satisfied. I could understand (maybe) the media glomming onto this for a story or whatever, but what really bugs me is the way the Democrats, especially here, rip on him. John Kerry is one of the best, most consistent, champions we have in Congress. People can't seem to see past the end of their noses. It's Short Attention Span Theater, for sure. No loyalty whatsoever in the ranks. It disgusts me.

7. I agree with every single word, Blue_In_AK!
Sen. Kerry deserves kudos and support for what he's been doing for the Dems, all across the country. Good grief.

For some thoughtful commentary on all this nonsense, check out some of Mark Barrett Oct 31 and Nov 1 postings at http://www.thepremise.com/
I don't always agree with every thing he says, but, for some reason, his pieces have a calming effect on me.

I loved this post: http://thepremise.com/archives/10/31/2006/528

Bank on this. Whatever George Bush has to say about John Kerry’s botched joke, the very act of Mr. Bush mentioning it will lend credence and renewed viability to Mr. Kerry.

George Bush has neither the support not trust of the American people. He lost all three presidential debates to John Kerry, and won another term only on his promise to win in Iraq and keep America safe. Iraq has gone south, and with it, Mr. Bush’s credibilty.

So here’s hoping he lays it on extra thick this time.

And I agree - he's so totally rational that I get the same calming effect as well. It's lovely.
