But let's get this much straight. Mr. Kerry wasn't disparaging the American troops in Iraq. No one who has been in combat, as he has, would think of saying such a thing.
<snip> For that, Mr. Kerry is getting ambushed by the White House in a manner that's awfully reminiscent of the smearing of his Vietnam War record during the 2004 presidential campaign.
<snip>
This, from the very president and commander in chief who last month suggested that the Iraq war will go down in history as just a comma. This, from a president and commander in chief who should be paying less attention to a defeated political rival and more attention to U.S. forces having to retreat, in essence, from the streets of eastern and central Baghdad.
<snip>
It's, yes, Mr. Kerry who sees this war for what it's become, and is refreshingly willing to say as much.

Although I don't think Kerry should actually try to use that line himself.

I think eventually he'll use this unfortunate incident as the punch-line for a new joke poking fun at himself. Let's face it John Kerry has a wicked sense of humor and is incredibly witty, but Jerry Seinfeld he's not (and I'm sure he knows that). Some people are just better at telling jokes than others.

3. more evidence of a net gain for Kerry and the Dems. |
|
Looking back at it, it will be a negative against the Bushies, not JK. And who knows, maybe it will even "humanize" him to the people who persist in thinking he's stiff or aloof. At least they will have seen the passion he can show when he feels something deeply. They're not likely to watch him give one of his killer speeches on Cspan, are they.

4. people seem to want to forget that Kerry IS a veteran who served in Combat |
|
for all the Kerry "i served in Vietnam" jokes. it's still the truth and helps during these attacks. he himself was a soldier . that matters when you want to accuse someone of hating the troops or whatever else.
Cheney and Bush and other chickenhawks who never served with their phony statements on the greatness of the troops while cutting benefits, overextending their stay, not providing equipment are the ones who don't care for the troops.
you would never see people accuse any other veteran of hating the troops no matter what their comments might be. just look at John McCain's comments campaigning for Duckworth's opponent. nobody accused him of being negative towards the soldiers in any way. he served of course, there is no way he could do that.
there is a different standard for Kerry.
