My LTE to my local paper (I just sent it out)

To the editor,

Today, I read several letters to the editor of feigned outrage over John Kerry's botched joke about George Bush, and I had to wonder -- do these people think we're stupid? A joke trumps a war fraught with collossal errors and no plan? Every day a new tragic story unfolds in Iraq, a story of an incompetent administration that takes responsibility for no mistakes (and blames it on our Generals in Iraq instead), and, inexplicitly, says the Defense Secretary is doing a "fantastic job". Please, Mr. President, tell me that was just a botched remark.

In our democracy, when an administration has gone so wrong, is out of ideas, and is lashing out about trivial matters like a botched joke, it is time, in Andrew Sullivan's words, for an intervention. Please vote for Jim Webb and Phil Kellam this Tuesday, who will ask the right questions about the biggest issue of our times -- Iraq.

I was considering a letter myself, today.

4. I wasn't planning to do one about this, except that there were

2 letters trashing Kerry, and saying that's why we can't have a Democratic Congress. Obviously, wingnuts wrote the letters. So I felt a pivot and attack was correct. I inadvertently stole from Friedman -- but "do they think we're stupid" hit it on the nail.

5. Exactly, and I think it is a good idea to defend the good Senator

from what amounts to slander by the repubs.
