The Democratic Daily makes the NYT!!!
Congratulations KG!!!!!

From their story on Hillary wasting a hugh amount of money on a shoo in race,

"The Democratic Daily, a liberal Web site, accused Mrs. Clinton of “blowing a shameful $36 million” on a shoo-in campaign. The only other Senate candidate to come close to her spending level was Senator Rick Santorum, Republican of Pennsylvania, who spent about $24 million unsuccessfully defending his seat.

Mrs. Clinton’s cash on hand is certainly less than the $20 million to $30 million some of her advisers early this year predicted she would have in the bank as she moved from her Senate re-election toward a decision about a presidential campaign. She is now in the same ballpark as two fellow Democrats, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, who had $13.8 million in his account as of Sept. 30, according to election commission records, and Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, who had $10.6 million. The law allows money left in a Senate campaign fund to be transferred to a presidential campaign.

Aides to Mrs. Clinton said she was not available for comment. Asked whether she was satisfied with the way the money had been spent, and whether the campaign’s expenditures were within the norms of politics today, the executive director of her campaign organization, Patti Solis Doyle, replied in an e-mailed statement: “We’re very pleased with the outcome of this election: the bottom line is victory with 67 percent of the vote, a substantial increase among independents and Republicans, and a list of several hundred thousand donors, beneficial in this and future campaigns.”

Yet the way she spent the money troubled some of Mrs. Clinton’s supporters, many of whom have been called on repeatedly over the years to raise and give money for Bill Clinton’s two presidential campaigns, his legal expenses, his library, his global antipoverty and AIDS-fighting program and now his wife’s political career. One Clinton supporter said it would become harder to tap repeat donors if it appeared that the money was not being well spent."

It goes on to say Hillary has the ability to raise huge amounts of money. (True - but look she spent a huge amount on direct mail to raise that amount.)

1. Congrats to DD. Great article. She felt a need to spend that kind of money,
it makes Hillary appear insecure and wasteful.

2. It's kind of a strange article
The NYT has had a million Hillary walks on water articles - this is not that.

It also diminishes her win - Schumer got 71, Spitzer got 2 points higher (and his opponent actually has a record in Republican politics - though he was weak compared to Spitzer - but not a loony tune like Hillary's opponent.

It may not be as drastic - but wasn't the first sign that all was not well with Dean was that he was blowing through money.

(Kerry also has less money than they say because he spent a lot of money in fall 2006 helping candidates -per the Heyjohn response.)

11. Can somebody please jog my memory?
I distinctly remember that the amount that I repeatedly heard mentioned shortly before the election was roughly twice that, something like $67 millions. I remember the question marks inside my head, wondering what on earth did she spend all that money on, and thinking of the gazillion better ways all those $ could have been spent. Anybody else remembers this? Just detail I guess, if you can call more than $30 million a detail... And by the way, congratulation KG :-)!

12. I remember hearing that whe raised about $45 million
which would mean that she would be left with about $15 million. I assume that the $30 million may not be the final total - as some charges take a while to come in. Bayh is suppose to have about $10 million and Kerry said he had spent down to about $8.5 million to raise all the money he did and to campaign as he did.

18. It's also been continuously cycled on MSNBC all morning
They speak of all the money spent - and then divide on what it all means. (The dumbest comment is that it shows she knows it's easy to raise money - so she is unconcerned.)

They also somewhat diminish her win - while speaking of how large it was. Schumer was a few points higher (as was Spitzer). They don't mention that the candidate against her was a complete joke.

22. Good work. The spending is really shocking.
Oh, and she deserves the scrutiny. Kerry was put through hell because of that heyjohnkerry web site and then Clinton's comments about his flub. Let her answer to the charges of her being frivolous with her donated money. Is she that insecure that she needs to spend this much to guarantee a reelection or is she just this careless with money.
I hope this story gains momentum over the holiday weekend and it plays and plays- serves her right.

It sounds like she's insecure, vain and careless. Hello - $51,000 on professional photographers for "donor relations"???

24. Peter Daou does push back on Hillary piece in NY Times
I haven't heard from him personally but I found this on Mahablog - http://www.mahablog.com/2006/11/21/sloppy-reportng-in-the-new-york-times/

Interesting - Peter claims the NY Times piece doesn't note Hillary's 2.5 million dontated to the DSCC and DCCC - it's noted on page 2 of the NY Times piece.

27. What on earth is
going on with Hillary Clinton and her finances? Between this and the Carville thing, I just don't know why they're trying to hog the spotlight. Clinton is disowning Carville, Matlin is soliciting money for Libby, Daou is in caught in the middle of $36 million spending spree...

Good job keeping on top of all of this KG!
