Mass-souls are not just snarky to tall people. Read this
http://www.boston.com/ Look at the front page thing on finishing Deval Patrick's Campaign slogan.

We are snarky to everyone and everything. It's not partisan. (Remember, we LIKE Deval, for now.)

1. Whome, Rox, LevK: These are great!
Together we can:

sell our one-bedroom condo
book John Kerry at Kowloons Comedy Connection. (Sorry, but that's funny.)
Resurrect the Central Artery
tackle Belicheck and tear off that freakin' sweatshirt
find Whitey (And Romney while we're at it.) (Whitey Bulger, a, long story.)
stop buying eggs and milk at the first mention of snow.

Hahahahaha! These are great!

4. I voted for that one!
I really liked that one and the one about finding Whitey and Romney.

We often get questions about why Boston newspapers are so snarky. This is just notice that they are snarky to everyone and everything and it's a cultural thing. (New Englanders in general and Mass-Souls in particular are snarky bastids.)

5. It's true.

I think it goes back to puritanical understatement. It's not okay to show pride in anything, so you have to cut down the ones you love in order to demonstrate that you are appropriately unprideful.

This doesn't account for Howie Carr, though. He's just a shit.

6. You know, I had to acknowledge my own inner Puritan this weekend
I was watching a special on The Capitol on C-Span and they were talking about the Brumidi Corridor near the Senate and I didn't, ahm, like it. http://www.aoc.gov/cc/art/brumidi/index.cfm

Ahm, I found this too elaborate and fancy for a building in which a democracy conducts it's business and that being in such august surroundings could, ahm, turn your head and give you airs about being, ahm, you know, a Senator.

Sigh! I actually felt this way. I, I, I, am a terminal Mass-soul. I don't want a Governor's Mansion. (like I'm gonna pay for some guy to live in high and mighty style. Get a friggin job pal.) And, ahm, I find the Capitol too fancy for a democracy. (It could turn their heads you know, then you get people who think they own the place. )

Help me Whome! There must be a 12 step for recovering Mass-soul Puritans. Help me!

7. I swear, it's something they
keep putting in the water.

It's funny - whenever someone tees off on MA and calls us elitists I just have to groan. Most of us are so the opposite of elitists. We're all about making sure noone gets too above themselves.

8. Oh Lord is that ever the truth
We must constantly be on guard, lest the people we like know that we like them, and they begin to act like they have a free ticket or something. It would turn their heads.

By the way, it would be wonderful to have people who were born in absolute but genteel poverty in Mass, who went to Boston College on scholarship and served for 3 years in the Peace Corps, then went to law school and only represented the innocent in court and who live in modest shacks in close by suburbs, or maybe the Back Bay, represent us in Congress. They must not be too good-looking, that that is suspect all by itself, and modest and self-effacing with great senses of humor and brains, talent, drive, ambition, and political skills, but like not in an obvious way. (Cuz that is icky.) Why can't we find people like that. (LOL!)

It's true. We are insane. The 'leveling instinct' is very strong hereabouts. Everyone has to be a 'man (or woman) of the people' or we accuse them of being stuck-up snobs.
