2. Kerry's the native son - at least per the 2004 BG guide to Boston |
|
which said he was not a native of Massachusetts.

3. I am happy it isn't NY, but what advantages are there to Denver? |
|
I really don't know much about this process of picking a location.

I think the Dems are looking to expand territory in the Western states. More and more, the libertarian westerners are turning away from the conservatives and toward the Democratic Party.
Denver has a shiny new airport and is the fifth largest hub in the U.S. I'm sure Frontier airlines is happy about it--it's their hub. I'd much rather consider flying there from Wisconsin than to New York, which seems a lot more intimidating--difficult and expensive.

8. The main one that I can see is public goodwill |
|
The party at large thought that Denver would be a "cooler" place to have it because it was more "regular America." The politics of the decision had become such that choosing NYC would've been interpreted as a slap in the face to the grassroots. Dean just didn't want to go there, I imagine.
(And I think he wants to metaphorically flip off the Clintonites....)

11. Just flipping off the Clinton's is enough for me. I apologize in advance to those who support them. |

Denver seems like a good spot. Any date yet? Hopefully, we will be smarter this time and schedule it later that in 04, and even better, after the Repubs.

Seemed like a complete no-brainer. I couldn't imagine why they even hesitated.

5. Probably a power struggle |
|
I may be going over the edge seeing Hillary people everywhere, but I imagine there was some serious behind-the-scenes fighting between the Dean people and the Clinton people.
This is great news. I have no particular problem with NYC, but it would've been spun as a Hillary anointment, which is sickening.

Besides both NY papers (Post and Daily News) are complete rags. Glad to hear it.

7. Denver had/has problems. |
|
That have to do with basic logistics. (Number of hotel rooms, physical space to do this, location of the facilities, etc.)
Putting on a Convention, post 9/11, is a nightmare. Dean had to be sure Denver could do it. Remember, the Dem Convention basically shut down Boston in 7/04. (I liked it, but that is a big consideration.) Major rail, subway and highways were inaccessible. It is a very, very big deal and you have to make sure the Host City can handle it. There are problems in Denver. It will be a very bumpy ride.

I have family in Denver. I think they can expect a visit. :-)
If the party won't let me inside with the kewl kidz I'll cheer - or heckle, depending on the nominee - from the outside.
