the first debate: "Don't confuse the warriors with the war." Sure this war is stupid, but the soldiers are not. I think some people in that thread were generalizing on the Abu Gharaib torture piece of the war, but most of the soldiers are decent people. It's the people at the top who are rotten.

I alerted on the two ringleaders. They were pretty obvious. But they definitely had "devil's advocates" in there claiming to hate the troops just to give fuel to their ranting.
For the record, I'm not that fond of many of our troops either; there is often a certain type that goes in for military service, and I think trying to say they're all just goodhearted people serving their country is a little naive. But neither do I think that type is the majority, nor do I detest individuals in the military as a rule.
But I just wanted to make my viewpoint clear here, because I am not a "lefty freeper," but I don't seem to agree with many on this thread either.

But these trolling fuckers were trashing everyone who's ever worn a uniform - including John Kerry and all good, honest and valiant soldiers like him. Every time I hear about Abu Ghraib and get pissed at all the ignorant freeping assholes who join the military just to blow shit up, I have to think about all the John Kerrys who are in Iraq right now, serving because they believe that signing up, whether after 9/11 or what, was the right thing to do.

I have trouble. saying simply that I support the troops. It makes it sound like I support the war, which is what the troops are doing fighting an immoral, unjust war. I do hold the troops responsible for their actions as I hold all people responsible for their actions. It's like the sixties slogan, "What if they had a war and nobody showed up?" They are culpable by showing up... I support them as human beings, my brothers and sisters, but can't support the war they fight. I pray to God that they will become enlightened to the senselessness of this war and rebel as they can. Some already have when they returned in the Iraqi War Vets against the war. Now those are the troops I fully support...

35. This war is immoral and I don't support the war |
|
I also won't go rah-rah for the troops or get teary-eyed over propaganda about how they are fighting for "us" or for freedom.
I can't begin to understand why someone would join the military right now, but I know that many of them come from crappy towns like Flint that America The Corporation and GWB have destroyed, and they may truly feel that this is their only chance to make something of their lives. I think it's sick that our government preys on the poor that they've created and on people of color especially, who are caught in this machine.
I feel really sad for the ones in this predicament, or the idealistic, brainwashed ones that believe the lies about who our enemies are and want to be brave and do the right thing.
There are others I don't feel sad for at all, but I can't tell by looking at them which camp they fall into, so I reserve my disgust and hatred for the regime and its machinery, including its propaganda.
There's a documentary called Gunner Palace coming out that tells the story of some of the troops in Iraq and is supposed to be very fair and balanced. I think we should all see it if we have the chance; I know it will be playing in San Francisco, but probably has limited release elsewhere. That's the sort of thing that interests me: truth telling, not rallying a false sense of patriotic support.

amongst other things. I saw two kinds of disruptors. One, I almost agreed w/ if it wasn't for his/her other stupid posts. The others were just so far leftfield. They don't understand that most people don't think like them. Even most Dems don't think like them. I'm glad DU doesn't represent most Dems but it pisses me off that the evil media uses these kinds of posts to color all liberals. It's bullshit.

They'd rather be smug, right, and marginalized. But hey, at least you can't blame them. They "supported" Kerry... sorta.
Oh, but I can.
Ed Schultz brought this up last week. That the Right would like to see him fall. But also that some on the left wanted to see him fall too, as he wasn't "liberal" enough for them.
He said that he figured he talked like most Americans, and that many Americans thought like him. Yeah, that's about right. He's typical of the average Dem worker bee that I saw during the election. Of course we were peppered here and there with mroe extreme folk, but most of us just weren't that far to the left.
Hell, if no one had told me, I wouldn't have realized that Busch was a Bush supporting company. In one way, I agree that these people only know how to "support the troops" superficially, by putting up ribbons and making nice ads, but not by making sure they are taken care of properly when they get home, or worrying about the backdoor draft, or making sure that those who take the same risks get the same benefits later (active duty vs reserves vs National Guard). No, alot of them just put up little signs and ribbons and then figure they're done.
If we start getting "spitters" again, I'm going to have to get an umbrella and let them spit on me first. Maybe I can make them run dry before they can get to the soldiers. Then I'll close up the umbrella and beat them about the head and shoulders. Some hippie I turned out to be. Should I turn in my peace sign?

|
I liked Abbie Hoffman and his ilk. Stuff like razing the evil spirits out of the Pentagon was cool. Creative. But wait, were those guys hippies, or radicals, or activists, or what?
I guess I'm not sure of my labels. I suppose hippies weren't all that political.
My local radio guys, who are right wing and sort of a poor man's Rush, but still funny when they're not talking on politics, calls them "stench ranchers." They seem to mean commune folks and those who didn't bathe much. Sort of a Charles Manson type I suppose.
I wonder how many in the sixties tried to support the troops as they protested the war, and how many called them baby killers. I know that some say the latter are a myth, but some even on this board remember being spat upon and called babykillers.

Isn't that how Carville put it? I thought the Super Bowl was a little over the top with the patriotism this year too, but I don't need to trash the troops if I chose to make the point. I didn't see the Busch ad, I honestly didn't pay all that much attention. I really don't understand why these people don't get that they make it hard for the entire Democratic Party.

Thanks for pointing me to it. I really had to address one of those fools. Out of the many things I could think of to account for that kind of madness, I really hope it was a troll just trying to make us look bad by associaiton. Damn, that's small minded. I wonder how many of these people really know anyone in the military. The people I know in the military (especially the enlisted) aren't bloodthirsty savages. They were regular high school kids with ordinary dreams. I worry every day for two of my friends who are overseas right now, and I hate to think they'd ever get mad at me or us for the likes of these fools who piss on them for no reason.
It's a damn tragedy.

Not only is he an ass, but evidently he's pretty tough to want to take on a marine (lol). He'd probably reconsider if he ever saw my pal face to face. Of the two of these men, one is obviously a coward and the other is tough as nails. I think we know who is who.
OTOH, watching my buddy kick that guy's ass would be pretty funny.
