I still have not listened to the hearing, but I have read the proposal, and I agree with Kerry.

Now that he has shaken free of his own White House ambitions, Sen. John Kerry has let loose on a proposal pushed by three 2008 presidential contenders to slash global warming pollution over the next half-century.

The Massachusetts Democrat assailed legislation (S 280) on Tuesday cosponsored by Arizona Republican John McCain and Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois for not moving quickly enough to reduce greenhouse gases.

“It is not going to get the job done. . . . It’s that simple,” Kerry said outside a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee hearing on climate change.

“If you believe in the science . . . then you have to do the full job. There’s no halfway here,” added the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, who last week announced that he will not seek the 2008 nomination.

Inside the hearing room, the presidential wannabes joined about two dozen other senators in laying out their preferred policies to Chairwoman Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. Boxer faces the difficult task of balancing concerns like Kerry’s with those from members who criticize the McCain bill for going too far.

Kerry, who plans to offer his own bill this week, has voted for two previous versions of the McCain measure.

The McCain/Clinton/Obama proposal has 3 Presidential candidates on it - will that lead to giving it more strength as their allies will push it? It also is a bill that has been pushed in the past. The other question is how much work the 3 will put into this as it comes closer to 2008.

It will be interesting to see how Kerry's differs. I wonder whether Al Gore will weigh in on this when the bills are studied.

It's occurred to me that the s___ he's endured from what Digby accurately called the"low-life" DC press, as well as the sniping he's gotten from his more cowardly Senate and Democratic colleagues, is all about this: unlike his political-insider critics, John Kerry is actually serious about bringing change to this country. I keep thinking I can't admire him any more than I already do, and then he does something else to make him admire him more. Oh. bravo.

Kerry is at about 3:15 into the hearing. (Right after Sen. Feinstein.) Must hear the intro from Carper. Nice.

I never heard the end of this testimony. Okay, ahm, no Iowa, no blanket ethanol anymore. (I was never really fully onboard the ethanol express, I gotta admit.) And, ahm, the clean coal processing position has changed a little bit.

I just watched it, and he's great. He really hits his stride about 10 minutes in, when he starts talking about the urgency, how the Senate doesn't get the urgency. .just loved it.
Like you said, Carper's intro is not to be missed!! Music to my ears.
