John and Teresa Heinz Kerry

In 1994 the winds in Washington were changing. They were also changing in John Kerry's personal life as he entered into his first serious relationship since his painful breakup of his marriage. Teresa Heinz was the earthy, auburn-haired widow of another tall Yale alumnus, a U.S. senator from Pennsylvania: H. John Heinz III who died in April 1991 in helicopter crash.

At age 55, Teresa was five years older than John Kerry. She still spoke with a soft Portuguese accent. She loved roses and gardens that instilled "an indigenous sense of spirit and wildness." In Pittsburgh, she had a reputation for giving generously, for speaking her mind, and for displaying a Mediterranean-style volatility.

Teresa and John shared a passion for environmental causes. One of Kerry's first act as a new senator was to introduce acid rain legislation, an issue he continued to champion. He also pressed for giving states more authority over offshore oil drilling, for higher automotive fuel efficiency standards, and for stricter controls over nuclear energy facilities.

Heinz inspired by rain forests and savannas of her African youth, was vice chair of the Environmental Defense Fund and was involved in a variety of related groups.

Heinz and Kerry knew each other casually through her late husband. But they both attended the United Nations "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the pair became reacquainted. They began dating in 1994 when they attended the same Washington dinner party and Kerry drove her home, stopping for a stroll through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the way. They became engaged that November, just as the Republicans were taking over Congress.

On May 26,1995 at an evening ceremony underneath a canopy, Kerry exchanged gold rings with his bride. Social and political glitterati gathered at Heinz's home on Nantucket Harbor. Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary performed at the wedding.

I love the woman but I gotta' admit - I didn't like that dress. I guess I just don't like ruffles on anyone over 10 years old. And Oscar De LaRenta is usually quite reliable, I think he was off there.
