Small business funds urged
Wednesday, January 09, 2008
By JO-ANN MORIARTY
jo-ann.moriarty @newhouse.comWASHINGTON - U.S. Sens. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., and Olympia J. Snowe, R-Maine, yesterday called on the White House to include extra money - instead of budget cuts - in this year's budget for the Small Business Administration, the agency that oversees small businesses, an economic engine for the country.
Kerry, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Snowe, the committee's top Republican, wrote to James A. Nussle, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, stating that since Bush took office, "SBA's budget has been cut by 31 percent. For fiscal 2008 (when Democrats controlled Congress), Congress passed the first real funding increase for core small business programs - adding almost $40 million over the previous year's budget request and actual funding."
"President Bush talks a lot about helping small businesses, but he hasn't delivered. We are facing a tightening credit market and a tough employment outlook due to the sub-prime mortgage crisis," Kerry said yesterday.
...
And Senator Kerry goes to Western Mass.
