Winkel is most proud of Moussavi's forthright editorials for the Tiger Hi-Line. The student publication has a much larger reach than most high school newspapers because it's distributed to all Cedar Falls households through an agreement with the city newspaper.
Moussavi believed that the school paper should endorse a presidential candidate last fall, and he designed a unique method for the editorial staff to make their choice. He laid out the candidates' positions on more than a dozen issues side by side without naming the candidate on each.
The staff members weighed each issue that way and endorsed John Kerry.
"Most of the staff thought they would vote conservatively, but many surprised themselves," Moussavi said. "It wasn't based on politics but on the issues. That way we avoided a lot of trouble that other high school papers get into."
