1. Kerry is talking about energy now |
|

I just turned on the TV to C-span and suddenly heard and saw Kerry. A pleasant surprise. He's talking about how Bush's energy policy really does nothing to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. He listed the huge increases in 4th quarter profits for oil companies - some he listed were over or near 100% the lowest of about 35%. Then he asked if people got even a few % increase and talked about how the increase in gas prices were affecting them and others like truckers. Then said the tax breaks in the energy bill mostly go to the oil companies and do little for new technologies.
Sounded like an updated version of his campaign, with some of what he said at the Brookings Institute talk, but it was more. He is talking about how energy can help lots of problems - creating new technologies will create jobs, help the environment, which will help some health issues. He talked about how last oil crisis did change behavior for a while. Will make the country stronger.
I am unfortunately a slow typist and I missed the beginning. Really good talk, worth getting text on.

2. Was this on the floor? |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-20-05 11:00 AM by TayTay
Or was he speaking somewhere else?
From The Note: At 1:15 pm ET, the President will talk about energy at the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Legislative Conference, trying to spur long-stalled congressional action. Kerry plans remarks on the Senate floor. And Dean intends to hit the gas peddle hard at his morning appearance before the Building and Construction Trades Dept. of the AFL-CIO Legislative Conference.
It's almost as if the Democrats have a Message of the Day on an Issue Voters Care About!!!
But from Dan Bartlett on the White House lawn this morning on FNC, to the President's speech, the battle is fully joined.
SNIP Sen. Kerry's floor speech will allege that the Bush Administration and the Republican Congress have failed to do anything about the biggest economic issue right now, gas prices, and the dependence on foreign oil as a national security issue, and contend that the bill they're stumping for makes the problems worse.

3. It was during morning business |
|
I caught it by random chance too--just flipped on the tv while having my coffee, and there he was. Energy policy, the high cost of gas, the need for renewable energy--it was reminiscent of the campaign. And he did target Bush for failing to do a thing about it.
Blue tie and blue pinstriped shirt today--a nice change from all those red ties!

4. I think he may be getting ready to floor speak again |
|
Sen. Snowe mentioned that he had to leave the SBA hearing to give a speech. And the Senate is talking about Energy.

it's hard to keep up with you guys (and work too...:-))
I was watching the SBA hearing and wondering where Kerry was. Very dry and wonky while I was there.

6. But completely good stuff |
|
Ahm, honest, I am going to transcript that one. Lots of good stuff about how hard it is for SB's to get insurance. (I liked it. But I will admit that it was a wee bit on the dry side. It was wonky, but I kinda like that part. AHP's anyone? CHIP's on kids' health care.) Unfortunately, eerything is going to seem kind of dull after yesterday afternnon's fireworks in SFRC.
BTW, I sent you mail. Did you get it?

Haven't had a chance to read through it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Did you look at it? Did they get all the thorny John exclamations in there?? (:loveya:)

But we know who they came from. boy was that ever a great moment in political theater. That was a stunner.
I like that, "Thorny John." Makes sense.

His voice is most distinctive. Honestly, I'm still swooning. That was SO much fun.
For a bit of wonk heaven, check out my new post in the Bolton info thread. Steve Clemons posted links to the committee staff interviews (Westermann, etc.) Lots of good, wonky reading in there!

11. Kerry being there is the best thing that could happen when you turn on the |
|
the TV. I was just glad I happened to have Cspan2 on last night and hadn't changed it.
He still looked good. The speech was really strong in ideas and in attacking the status quo - I loved where he pulled energy needs, the economy, the environment, and health all together as having one root solution that could help all of them. (I vaguely remember he did this during the campaign as well (or maybe it was even something after the election.)
