In Baton Rouge, his meeting attracted about 250 people, including journalists, school children and supporters of last year's presidential campaign.
Many stayed afterward to get autographs and pictures.
Tourists Paul and Sallie Thompson of Cape Cod, Mass., like the pupils from Tallulah, didn't know about the meeting when they arrived to tour the Old State Capitol.
However, once they found out, they were eager for a glimpse of their senator.
"I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat," explained Paul Thompson, who said he likes the Kids First proposal.
Alma Stewart, a health-care worker from Baton Rouge, said she's seen the hard choices parents make because their children aren't insured.
"Parents make decisions in the interest of money, because they can't afford health care for their children," she said.
Dr. Stewart Gordon, chief of pediatrics at LSU Health Science Center, joined Kerry on stage Thursday and talked about how healthy children learn better.
Marilyn Cox of Lake Charles also praised Kerry's efforts.
"We are just very proud of Sen. Kerry and the work he's done and continues to do."
