Lost in The Disinformation Society, The Masses are Not Happy
Lost in The Disinformation Society, The Masses are Not Happy
20 May 2005

Last Wednesday I posted a piece about Grover Norquist and the Republican control of the media aka “The Republican Noise Machine.” Yesterday in his speech on the Senate floor, John Kerry referred to the right-wing’s control of the media, “We have an Administration that continues to want to fund fake newscasts to mislead people all across America.”

"The Administration’s willingness to consistently abandon the truth has done great damage. Americans are less willing to listen – less likely to trust or take anything that is said in Washington seriously."

The battle for the hearts and minds of America has taken a great toll. We’re inundated with fake news, mis-reported news and a grave lack coverage of some news. Yesterday MSNBC reported Voters dissatisfied with Bush, Congress. That story quickly got buried by other news, lest we find out that an NBC/WSJ poll reveals 'angry electorate'.

2. This is an incredibly important point
he was making, and I wish more were saying this.

One of the things * has wrought is a level of public cynicism I haven't seen since the Vietnam era. And I feel quite sure it was deliberate. You see a bit of it in some of the polls - like that one a few days ago where people were just blaming "congress" for doing a bad job, and failing to differentiate between repubs and dems.

John Kerry remembers that time all too well. So do I. Cynicism breeds apathy. Apathetic people don't take to the streets, and they don't vote.

3. We are also in a time of transition
Sigh! The times they are a-changing. (To, ah, coin a phrase. LOL!) Americans have gone down the route of all fear all the time. This never lasts. It is always a temporary state. As much as people want to be safe, they also want to be free. Free from undo influence of the state and free from forced religion and the false piety of false prophets.

Stick around. This battle promises to be a good one. And have some faith. Things are bad. The people are beginning to see that. That's why the poll numbers are turning. That's why the bulk of people now believe the Iraq war was not worth the cost. That's why * and the Rethug Congress are tanking in the polls. As Lincoln said, "You can't fool all of the people all of the time." This is an unalterable truth. The tide will turn. It always does.
