A "What if" supposer for Sandnsea (cuz she's a tease)
I adore reading "What If's" on American (and world) history. One of the all time great "What If's" of American history is: what would have happened if the Mayflower hadn't gotten lost and had landed in Virgina where it was actually chartered to land? The classic answer is that the American nation never would have emerged and there certainly never would have been an American Revolution as the impetus for it was a Boston/New England thing. (Good and bad ensue.) Just a fun 'Supposer' that is interesting to think about at odd gardening moments and long drives to work, nothing more.

Since Sandnsea keeps trying to tease me into the forbidden arts of bragging (which can only bring about a cosmic smack-down of an epic scale, don't ya know) I will instead indulge a 'not so secret' wish of hers and give a "What if" of her very own. (Oh admit it, you have Senator envy. You do, you know you do and it's okay. I understand, but I'm still not going to diss Wyden. I kind of like him.)

What if, instead of sticking around Massachusetts after the '71 Congressional loss, John Kerry decided that MA was just too prickly and decided to move elsewhere where the people and politicians were no so frustratingly set-in. Maybe he heads out for that 'Other Coast' and decides to settle in Oregon, cuz it's pretty progressive. What would have happened? Could a guy like him have succeeded in Oregon politics? (Or California, which also seems to take in strays?) Could a Kerry that had separated from Massachusetts have run for the Senate? For President? Would it make a difference in what happened in 2004?

(Relax Whome, it's only a 'supposer.' It never happened. I'm just trying to give sandnsea a shot at 'our Senator' so she can tell me what she thinks would happen. It might be fun. A 'What If' is the closest I am ever going to come to a trade.)

1. hah. Hey, WEL - HANDS!!!

All I can say is, "what if?" is a fun game, but I have trouble picturing John as anything but a Masshole. You can take the Masshole out of Boston, but you can't take the Boston out of a Masshole.

4. Oh, I do too!
But 'What If's' are fun. I love the Mayflower 'What If.' Run by men, couldn't get proper directions, wind up 500 miles from their destination, at the beginning of winter without food or shelter. Damn. Wonder what the country would be like if that ship had landed in VA where it was supposed to. No religious founding of America, because the two populations would have blending into one, the VA one. No moral imperative to create the pure theocratic state, no slow realization that you can't create the pure theocratic state without devolving into tyranny. No call for separatism. No intrinsic New England Puritanism and it's constant push to perfect the inner self. (Though that is not possible, of course. But try any way.) Interesting stuff.

And yes, Sen. Kerry is from here. It's a part of him. (For better and worse. We are not the easiest people to get along with, you know. But it's a good deal, I guess, he puts up with us, we put up with him, life is good.)

But I thought it would be fun to see if we have any crative souls in here who would come up with an interesting 'What If' he moved to my state and eventually ran. Would it have been easiery to become Pres if he wasn't a 'Massachusetts Liberal?' and so forth.

"A 'What If' is the closest I am ever going to come to a trade."

Haha, caught ya'!!

Giving my Senator props, he was the only one to vote no on the energy bill:

"As Ron Wyden said, "In the end this energy bill is still about cars, carbon and corn. The legislation fails to sufficiently address fuel economy, global warming or lowering gasoline prices for American consumers, while special interests from oil to ethanol make out very well.”

6. The energy bill hasn't come up yet?
It should come up next week or the week after. It's quite the piece of work, eh? Another complete * sellout to his favorite backers and a corporate give-away.

I am working on "John Kerry, Pied Piper of Little Beirut".????????????? Is this in Oregon?
