Poster has a point, but I disagree. Lots of interesting discussion re physical beauty. At least it's not another Clark or Hillary poll.

1. there is something about Schmidt - her physical appearance

that is kind of disturbing. Sometimes a person can be judged by their looks, I think. Sometimes what's inside shines through - and it's not a matter of being good looking or bad.

I've seen pictures of her outside the political arena, and she looks fine. When she starts spewing RW trash, that all changes. Something about veins popping and facial expression.

3. I think the original poster probably has a point

in saying that candidates shouldn't be judged solely on their appearance, but I don't think that was the case here. If Schmidt was a progressive candidate, yet looked the way she does, I'm sure there would be no DU harassment. (Well ok, I'm not actually sure, and all bets are off if she was DLC, but you know what I mean.)

On the other hand, I disagree that people are giving her hell because she's beauty challenged AND a woman. I think the vast majority of DUers are equal opportunity appearance bashers regardless of sex if we disagree with the person's politics.

I think politicians probably understand going into the game that they are going to be judged on much more than there political stances. Goodness knows the Freepers have bashed John Kerry's looks which just goes to prove that the are both dumb and blind!

4. Here's what bugs me.

There have been 17 million posts on DU. Who cares if a half dozen threads have posts that say Jean Schmidt is ugly? To take that one step further, I guess who cares if this one thread says we shouldn't care if she is or not?
Now I'm just confusing myself.
To tell the truth, I don't think that she's that bad. She could do without the 1980's hair bows, but otherwise, she looks fine in an anorexic sort of way.
In any case, It was an opportunity to post pix of my three favorite Dem guys.

7. Don't expect logic

I think it was their hatred that they saw reflected back at them. Also just as a truly weird or ugly photo of Bush will get enormous play here, I bet a bad shot of Kerry was more the norm there. I doubt they saw the many pictures of Kerry with kids, smiling happily interacting with them, any of the Butler pictures, or any of the beautiful pictures of him with Teresa or his daughters. The kindness we see in those pictures is hidden from them.

I have seen nice pictures of Bush, who is not naturally an ugly man. With a pleasant look and demeanor, he would be considered somewhat attractive. But with the nasty, angry, vindictive cold look he gets when he is questioned on anything, he becomes a very ugly man, but it's his personality showing through.

if they had nothing better to do. If you'll notice, all of the Repuke photos are studio shots meaning controlled lighting, make-up and hundreds of frames shot to get one picture.

politicians. The Republicans they chose were cable reporters (selected lor looks) and actresses. And Laura Bush. As you said these are the best pictures of them while I've never seen worse pictures for most of the Democrats.

Teresa is a very beautiful person, who seemed to become more beautiful when she spoke.

they bust out the worst pictures ever for the Dems. I know for a fact we have some hideous pictures of those Republican women. Not to mention the fact that that Debbie chick is nasty.
