Anybody have "Going UpRiver"?
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 01:20 PM by FreedomAngel82
This film is at FYE for $20 or so and I'm thinking of buying it. I do have the film on a disc because it was available to download online for free but would love to have the actual film and all that. Does the film come with any extra footage or anything like that or is it just the doc itself? Thanks.

3. well it was the first time I'd ever seen it, so yeah
I never saw it online or anything. I think it's a beautiful documentary all around. The music is captivating. I'm glad I have a nice copy--have watched it I think four times now. :)

7. I picked it up for less
I bought it for a friend via Amazon for only about $9. Maybe you should search around a little more. I have it on DVD also and I'm glad I do.

4. It's well worth the money
Great movie, very descriptive and insightful. I love the ending with Kerry in the helicopter, and Max Cleland taking about the effects of the war.

6. The DVD is well worth the money
I purchased my copy right before the election and watching it was one of the many things that reinforced the fact that I was voting for the right man. I still watch it from time to time when I really need a Kerry fix. (Not that you guys aren't enough. LOL.) One thing I wish is that there was a CD of the music from the film - I thought the music really added to the production.

I'm surprised there wasn't a soundtrack too. I would've liked it myself. :)

9. My daughter bought the DVD for under $10 on ebay
... for her oral presentation on Vietnam, and I'm glad she did because it's much better quality than the online version I have.
And she had it signed by Kerry when he came to Los Angeles in May.

I'm sure it's a wonderful testament to just how much of a true patriot JK is.

11. The film definitely helps you to understand
Kerry's feelings about Viet Nam, and shows that he was truly a patriot out to stop a war that he no longer believed in. It gives you a sense of his intelligence and maturity even as a young man. The film also gives you a little glimpse of what a little weasel Swift Boat Liar John O'Neil was even back then. (With footage from the old Dick Cavett show.)

20. She is proud of it :-)
It was a French-American school and they had only one Republican in the class. The students were critical about Vietnam and loved the presentation. Her teacher gave her 20 out of 20 points for her work. :-)

14. I've seen the film before
The people who made the movie had it available online to download for free during the election to spread to your friends and family and let people see it to get to know Kerry better. I love it and have it saved on a data disc, but I was wondering if there was anything else on there. But I'm probably going to buy it since at "Best Buy" their stuff is pretty good prices and I'm going out around the store today so I can see if they have it. Another good anti-war Vietnam vets film is "Unifinished Symphony." This shows John Kerry in it as well and it's basically a camera following the Vietnam vets in the 1971 protests.

15.  a related question
Isn't there another DVD--"Band of Brothers"? or some title like that. The question is, if I have Going Upriver, is the other DVD going to have enough other material to make it worth buying? Does anyone have both who can tell me?

"Brothers in Arms" (http://imdb.com/title/tt0372808/). Some interesting stuff on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002W2JP0/qid=1123269596/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/103-9515491-2216639?v=glance&s=dvd, including some hate-filled anti-Kerry screeds among the reviews, notably from people who never saw the film. It looks good, though.

I don't have it, but here's a fun link to check out: http://imdb.com/name/nm0449902/

Some interesting trivia there.

I took a second and registered because I wanted to read some of the comments about Kerry (and to do that you have to register - for free). Someone had asked the question "Why did you not vote for John Kerry" and one of the answers had me laughing out loud so hard I thought I'd share.

This poster said: "I didn't vote for him because he was anti-Christan, anti-war, pro-gay, pro-terrorist who would probably destroy the US economy and value system with his warped morals. Bush is one of the greatest presidents ever and will lead us to a new golden age."

FOLKS I THINK WE HAVE A WINNER IN THE KOOL-AID DRINKING CONTEST! The irony of that statement just oozes through cyber-space.

That quote was just too ripe to keep to myself so I thought I'd share.

Changing subjects entirely, has anyone here seen "Diary of a Political Tourist" by Alexandra Pelosi. By the looks of the description on the above mentioned site, that one also looks like it might Kerry Group worthy of checking out. Does anyone have an opinion of her as a filmmaker?

23. I saw it on HBO.
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 04:56 PM by whometense
I have a strong opinion of her as a filmmaker: that she's a spoiled brat who inserts herself into the scene W-A-Y too much - sort of like a spoiled female Michael Moore (when he's at his worst).

She is un-serious, but seems to feels she ought to be taken seriously. That said, there is some great footage in there. I love the part when Kerry takes her camera away from her and turns the camera on her. It makes you feel like cheering.

She focuses way too much footage on post-Iowa Dean, making him look pathetic in a way that I thought was unfair.

There's an amazing scene inside the White House Christmas party. Because of who she is she is allowed in places no other non-official-GOP filmmaker would be.

And she captures that unbelievable Peter King quote I have in my sig line. Which is worth the price of admission all by itself.

BTW - that IMDB quote was on for the ages!!!

On edit: Sorry - I removed the Peter King quote- forgot. It was "It's all over except for the counting. And we'll take care of the counting."

That's like calling someone pro-black or pro-woman and meaning it in a derogatory manner. I wonder how that dude was smart enough to type and press enter.

25. Also anti-war
It is fairer to say Kerry is anti-war than pro-war - both are too black and white. I don't understand how the candidate who has probably gone to chuch maybe 10 times more oven can be anti-Christian. (He gets a boust on this statistic as he apparently attended both the manditory St Paul's service and a Catholic one while in prep school.) Pro-terrorist is just slander - he was fighting terrorist banks when Bush was getting loans from them

19. Brothers in Arms
The difference with Going Upriver is that Kerry himself is interviewed in Brothers in Arms. It's not so much about Kerry alone but about all his crew-members, their experience in Vietnam and after the war. It's a bit like "Band of Brothers", very touching testimonies! And they show them re-united for Kerry's campaign. I was moved to tears when I heard one guy's account who was so depressed at one moment that he thought about committing suicide. Totally desperate he called Kerry, and Kerry talked him out of it and sent him some of his people to take care of him. A really cute story.
