http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=152x3508

This was posted in the Iowa group:

I was just notified that Kerry will be in Cedar Rapids this Sunday, Oct-09. He is coming in support of Justin Shields, who is running for City Council (a campaign I am assisting with). Just thought I would pass along the info to those that may be interested...

Might I add that this is a hell of an endorsement for a city council candidate?

1. Really.
One can only guess that he busted his ass for Kerry last year. Or else, he has some excellent connections.

3. I don't know, but I'm thinking of starting a petition to get him
to visit my state. You in? (snark, snark, snark.) We could point out that there is a Gubernatorial race next year that Dems really want to win and that we are wicked close to New Hampshire. (snark, snark, snark. TayTay's bitchy side comes out to play.)

Gosh, I wish Sen. Kerry would go on a listening tour near me. I am beginning to forget what he looks like. Sigh! I wonder where he will give the Iraq speech he has been working on. It thought it might come this week as the Senate is debating the Defense Appropriations Act for 2006, but the week is actually short due to the observance of the Jewish Holidays. Sigh!

Oh Iowa! Oh Minnesota! Please tell me what my Junior Senator is up to these days. (Okay, I'm done. No more poor TayTay posts for at least a week. And, bizarrely, I am oddly proud that Kerry is going on the road. The thread in the Iowa State group on DU was really quite nice and they seemed awed that Kerry, a big-time Dem, would stop to endorse in a city council election. I was genuinely proud of that. It is somewhat gratifying to see that folks from other states want to see the Gentleman from Massachusetts.)

9. Well he was home last night
According to BG, he was seen at the U2 concert.

Emotions reach dizzying heights for U2, fans

By Steve Morse, Globe Staff | October 4, 2005

The second leg of U2's ''Vertigo" tour hit Boston last night with a full-on bang. The sold-out crowd featured celebrities such as Tom Brady and John Kerry, but also thousands of U2 diehards who sang along so loudly that any decibel meter would have been smashed.

10. Ahm, the Globe was full of obscure Kerry references this morning
Did you see that odd story on the Metro page about House Speaker DiMasi? The Globe thinks he's been playing too much golf and should go back to work passing legislation in the Great and General Court. They complimented him on his golf game and his handicap of 5.7. They then compared his handicap to other MA pols and said Senator Kerry has a handicap of 19.9. Ahm, goodie?

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/10/04/dimasi_finds_time_for_golf/

I have never played golf in my life. Is that a good handicap for a tall guy in his 60's?

13. Probably average, not really sure, but I imagine golf is probably
our hyperactive senator's best sport.

On a different subject, it seems that Scot Lehigh has decided to endorse Al From this morning. Note to the Globe: Kerry got a lot more vote than Clinton 92.

The mood for moderation

By Scot Lehigh, Globe Columnist | October 4, 2005

WITH DEMOCRATS gleeful over the Republican woes in Washington, Al From, founder and CEO of the Democratic Leadership Council, is sounding a cautionary note as he tries to lay the groundwork for a repeat of 1992.

elect good people. Other states come along and start begging and pleading to borrow our Senators and they start staying away for longer and longer periods and before you know it, wham, they've gone and left us    for some other state and their enticement of hanging around people who aren't crabby all the time. Sigh!

Go ahead, take my Senators, I'll try and find others in the great state of MA who can fill their shoes. (Big damn shoes too if you ask me.) Well, it is for a good cause.

14. Tell you what - I'll lend you Chuck Grassley . . .
And apparently Kerry is partially attracted here by our "beautiful Christmas Sweaters," or so he told us back in January when he stopped by Des Moines -- so start knitting and buying sequins. . .

Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 08:38 AM by TayTay
That may be the oddest comment ever. I got nothing on that. AHm, can I have one, please?

Dear Gawd, no Grassley. I know he's not the nightmare known as Santorum, but not thanks. (Geez, next Texas will be offering a trade and I'll have nightmares about Cronyn and Hutchinson for a week. Have mercy. You know, we aren't used to people like that. I'm spoiled.)

17. I've spent an hour googling for the news story -- no luck yet!
I know it was posted on DU at the time, but advanced search is down!

I think he used the term "holiday sweaters" - I remember laughing out loud that he commented on them -- Iowans do indeed love them, and they are sooooooooooooo tacky IMHO. But while I was laughing, I was thinking about how sweet it was of him to compliment them.

20. OMG! Teresa would never let it in the house.
And Kerry has a long torso, it would be a fashion nightmare. Dear Lord, it looks like something my aunt made for me when I was 12.

Senator Kerry really is trying hard to be nice to Iowa. (Now I hae this visual image stuck in my head. Not good. Not good at all.)

I bet you would get Kerry's attention if you showed up in one of these at the next Mass Kerry Event.

Are these really a sort of local feature of Iowa? I like the ones in this ad, they are kind of sweet.

EDIT: Maybe I just have a problem with men wearing them.

23. 1. Seems to be a midwestern thing 2. Men don't wear them!
Although you might see a man w a snowflake sweater (no sequins of course) or something.

And of course many Iowans think they are tacky too --------- that's why I got such a kick out of Kerry commenting on how much he enjoyed seeing them again when he made his December 04 thank you visit.

Someday I'll find that news report. . .

25. Sadly I'm already committed to something else that day -- if I can wriggle
out I will go . . . but it isn't looking likely.

I asked people in the Iowa forum to do a write up if they go. Hopefully we'll get some info.

12. Between now and the election in Nov '06.
The elections he is showing up for now are for '05, I think. But you should get a few visits next year. I have a sneaking suspicion that AZ might be the 'other state' that the Dems are going to let into the early primary/caucus window. That makes it waaaaaaay more attractive to visit.
