Kerry ANWR Email
Did you guys get it and how do we get any attention to it? Along with the horrendous tax proposal and budget cuts. Did you hear Landrieu talking today about the teacher whose cancer has returned and was turned down for Medicaid? Lott says we can't do everything right now, it'll take years to rebuild, but that woman will be dead by then. 8 billion for the bird flu and nothing for emergency medicaid. But with SCOTUS and Plame, I don't know that we'll be able to get anybody's attention on these other issues.

Here's the email:

It's now or never if we want to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the White House and Republican leaders in Congress are stacking the odds against us. They're using underhanded procedural tactics to sneak through legislation to destroy the Arctic Refuge. The vote will occur this week in the Senate and next week in the House of Representatives.

We need your help to spread the truth about what's happening. We will fight this to the end, however long the odds, to show them that America won't stand for their misplaced priorities.

http://www.johnkerry.com/action/call/congress/

Despite years of control in Washington, George Bush and the Republican leadership have been unable to secure support for opening the Refuge to oil drilling.

Why? Because of you. Thanks to the incredible grassroots work that you've done year after year, we have been able to hold elected officials accountable on this issue and it has driven the Republicans crazy.

During the debate on the Arctic Refuge last spring, Republican leaders were so upset about our email and the work of more than 425,000 concerned members of the johnkerry.com community that they literally complained about it during the debate on the Senate floor.

We must have been doing something right and we need to do so again.

Please call Congress and urge them to support efforts to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Call your Members of Congress today
http://www.johnkerry.com/action/call/congress/

These votes will decide the fate of the Refuge. It's no time to be sitting on the sidelines. We have to make our voice heard in this debate on Capitol Hill, and if we lose the vote there, we have to make sure we don't lose the debate across America.

There are two important ways you can help:

1) Call your Members of Congress today and urge them to vote to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

2) Join me and millions of Americans who are working hard in 2005 and 2006 to change the course in Washington and elect more progressive leaders to Congress and the Senate who are committed to protecting and preserving all that makes this country so special. It's called Keeping America's Promise and we need your help to support candidates who share our vision of America.

People in America are tired of the corruption, cronyism, and incompetence coming out of Washington these days. And it isn't just underhanded tactics in politics; we are seeing it in policy as well.

We need to get the truth out about how Republicans are hijacking the legislative process to destroy Alaska's wildlife refuge.

Led by my friend Maria Cantwell of Washington in the Senate and my friend and fellow Massachusetts legislator Ed Markey in the House, we have established a strong bi-partisan coalition in the House and Senate to try to stop this underhanded maneuver.

We need your help to get the message out. Please call your Members of Congress and let the facts speak for themselves.
http://www.johnkerry.com/action/call/congress/

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge can't make even a small dent in meeting America's energy needs. U.S. Geological Survey scientists estimate that there is very likely only enough oil to supply America's needs for six months. And oil companies admit that even that won't be available for at least 10 years.
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's 19 million acres comprise one of the last places on earth where an intact expanse of arctic and sub arctic land remains protected.
An irreplaceable natural treasure, the Arctic Refuge is home to caribou, polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves, golden eagles, snow geese and more. Millions of other birds use the Arctic Refuge to nest and as a critical staging area on their migratory journeys.
The Arctic Refuge supports more than wildlife. For a thousand generations, the Gwich'in people of Northeast Alaska and Northwest Canada have depended on it and lived in harmony with it. To them, the Arctic Coastal Plain is sacred ground.
Oil companies are experiencing windfall profits while Americans struggle at the pump. They don't need any more giveaways from the Republican Party, especially ones that put our environment behind special interests.
It's time this Administration acknowledged we can't drill our way to energy independence. We have to invent our way there.

You can make a difference by getting this message out. Now is the time to take action. Call your elected representatives, recruit your friends and neighbors to do the same, and together we can break through.

Call your Members of Congress today

Starting this week, Senator Cantwell and I will be fighting to protect the Refuge on the Senate floor. And next week, the debate will move to the House of Representatives. The support of the johnkerry.com community is essential in this fight. We can't let the Republican leadership have the last word on saving this national treasure. Join us and send a powerful message to Washington that the American people are ready and willing to hold elected leaders accountable for the actions they take.

Thank You.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. This will be an historic vote for the environment. We really need your help to get the word out. Please pass this email along to all your friends and family.

1. Okay, that's it. I'm calling those bastards in NH.
They suck. If I have to look at smarmy Judd Gregg on TV once more railing against all the excesses of poor people and how they are wasting good budget money that should go to rich people instead I am going to tear my eyes out.

(Ahm, I clicked on the link to call my Sens. and Rep and it was somewhat recursive. I'm not calling John Kerry to lobby for this because it's just strange. I might call him just to say good work though. )

I can pretend to be from New Hampshire. I'll call Gregg's office, say three times in quick succession, "Yeah, we have no sales tax, yeah, we have no income tax and yeah we can't fund our school system. And boy are my property taxes high! See I'm a real Granite Stater. Now about this Artic Wildlife Refuge. You know, rich people will actually benefit if you deny oil companies the right to drill there. Honest. Yeah, it's the next site for outsourcing. Really! All your real constituents just love the place. Captive work force, no taxes, no labor laws. Just caribou and snow and a complete lack of enforcement police. You are shooting yourself in the foot by letting oil companies drill there when you could use the land to exploit a captive workforce instead. Wal-Mart could go up there. It's the Rethug dream."

Whadda ya think? Can I pass or do I have to call Kerry, Kennedy and Meehan?

3. I'll share mine.
It's only fair, since you've been so kind.
Can you say "younze guys"?

4. I'll give it a whirl.
I'll gargle or something. Maybe it will help. Or pretend I have a cold. That might disguise the accent a bit.

Santorum is hopeless, right? But Spector actually had a decent environmental record, if memory serves. I will give him a call and report back to you and Sen. Kerry to let them know I did this.

And thanks! It really is the little things that mean so much!

15. Look at this pic guys
This is a well field in Wyoming. From the drawings I saw of what they intend to do with ANWR, this is what it will look like. When they say it's only "x" amount of miles, they're only counting the square platforms, not the rest of the destruction you see.

8. Also, lots of rich people like to visit Alaska to see the beautiful
wilderness, I think your NH idea is good. They may question your area code though. But if Kerry, Kennedy, and Meehan don't get any calls they may think no one cares.

I got that one and a special NJ one to get people out going door to door, phoning etc , oh, and voting in next Tuesday's election. As we are already committed to help due to Sen Kerry's earlier requests, I didn't respond. (I've actually really enjoyed it. The hardest thing we did was a wine and cheese party for the assembly candidate - it was harder than we thought to get people to come - but it ended up being fun and good.)

(He wants us to vote too.) For the ANWR, I really should call my Representative. He's Republican, but when my daughter wrote him re: ANWR last time when it was in the Senate - she got back a very nice letter explaining that it wasn't in the House bill - so it was safe at that time. He's from an old Republican family that goes back forever - a distant relative bequeathed her estate to be the county's arboretum. So, he likely has a conservation background.

As I was happily reading these out loud, my husband mentioned we had a letter in snail mail from Hillary. So, I took it and started reading it aloud. Compared to Kerry's it was an insult to anyones's intelligence - Democrats want good long term decision making. Bush and the Republicans make irresponsible short term decisions. Then in talking about the difference between now and 2000, Hillary wrote
"We are now back in debt ......." I quit reading at that point annoyed that a major mailing didn't know the difference between debt and deficit.

I realize this is snarky and that Hillary's are like everyone else's - but Kerry's.

9. You practically live in NH don't you? I say go for it.
Also, I saw Judd Gregg on the Senate floor this summer. God, what a talentless douchebag he is. He was droning on and on about terra, terra, protecting America, and terra, and how in order to fight terra, we needed to support Bush 150%. He also made a snide, assholey reference to my Senator (cutie Durbin), referring to how he'd "disgraced our troops" by "comparing them to Nazis."

I wanted to leap down from the gallery and throttle him, but then I decided that I probably wouldn't be able to work for John if I got arrested for strangling a Repuke (on the Senate floor no less).

11. Plus you'd probably get some sort of rash
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 09:54 PM by TayTay
on your hands where you touched this horror. (Really, it wouldn't be good.)

I will call and use my MA phone #. A lot of New Hampshire folks work in Ma, they won't know the difference. And it will feel good to call and rant at that bastard. The other Senator from NH is not really a bastard. He is more like The Invisible Man. You never hear from him. (I think he follows Gregg around and just parrots whatever Gregg says.)

I think I'll call the firls from Maine as well. It couldn't hurt.

17. Please no...
NOT another Wal-Mart! There is a lot of truth in your captive workforce comment.

Sun-no-no and Grinch are bastards! Call them frequently. Why should NH residents have all the fun?

2. I did.
It sort of got lost in all the excitement today, but if there's going to be a vote on ANWR this week, it's important not to lose focus.
I will make my calls tomorrow.

5. I got it. But -
I wish he's have some detail somewhere (website, maybe) about what are these "procedural tactics" and why they are "underhanded." I agree about protecting the ANWR - but I like to know the facts and judge for myself. (Normally I would go to Thomas and read the bill, but apparently that's not what we're dealing with here.)

And besides, I'm just curious to death about what kind of games my so-called representatives play down there in DC.

7. NRDC asks to call one of the PA representative: Gerlach
as well as two other republicans from MN and WA.

Dear NRDC Earth Activist,

It's all come down to this.

The House of Representatives will vote as early as next week on a budget bill
that would sacrifice the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to massive oil
development and destruction.

We can win this showdown in Congress, but we must secure the votes of three
more moderate Republicans: Representatives Jim Gerlach (PA), David Reichert
(WA), and Mark Kennedy (MN).

We urgently need your financial support to run hard-hitting ads targeting these
three key Representatives in next Sunday's newspapers.

View the ad and donate: https://www.nrdcactionfund.org/arcticad/donate.asp

Our three targeted Congressmen say they oppose drilling in the Arctic Refuge.
But they are under tremendous pressure from President Bush and House leaders to
do the bidding of Big Oil.

We cannot expect these Republican Congressmen to vote against their leadership
unless they hear from thousands of their own constituents, demanding that they
stand strong in defense of the Arctic Refuge.

All we need is your support to make that outcry happen. View the ad and donate:
https://www.nrdcactionfund.org/arcticad/donate.asp

The Bush Administration is shamelessly exploiting the recent hurricanes and
high gas prices as excuses to industrialize the Arctic Refuge. But, as our ad
reveals, drilling in the Arctic Refuge will only save consumers one penny per
gallon at the pump in 20 years!

Meanwhile, ExxonMobil and Shell just reported third-quarter profits totaling
nearly $19 billion!

Help us get the truth out to tens of thousands of voters in the three decisive
Congressional districts before next week's showdown vote.

I urge you to make an online donation right now that could save America's
greatest sanctuary for Arctic wildlife:
https://www.nrdcactionfund.org/arcticad/donate.asp

Thank you.

10. ANWR is not a 'stand alone' bill but is inside another bill.
Sen. Stevens and Rep Don Young are both high up in the food-chain in the Senate and House budgeting process. And they want drilling in ANWR so bad they can taste it. They have lost on the drilling issue ina fair, 'up or down' vote. So, this time, they included the ANWR drilling in an appropriations bill. This means that it can't be filibusterd because of the rules. It can't be voted 'up or down' becuase it's in the bill that funds the US government and nobody wants to veto that bill.

It is underhanded and cowardly to do it this way. But that's Stevens for ya. He read Kerry out on the floor of the Senate back in the spring because Kerry dared to send out an e-mail asking the people on his list to call and try and derail this effort to drill in the ANWR. Stevens was pissed. He wore his Hulk tie and everything.

12. Thanks for the hints!
I guess I'm being a bit cranky tonight but I was just wishing that JK (or his writers) would understand that there are some among us who would like that kind of detail. I think it would make his email appeals stronger.

Either way I will call Specter and Finest-Mind-of-the-13th-century tomorrow.

16. Except for the fact that Kerry lost, it would have been almost comical
With Stevens wearing his hulk tie, looking like he would explode. Demanding that Kerry's email be put into the record - which Kerry had not objection to. Kerry was his normal sane articulate self while Stevens looked like a lunatic.

13. He may mean putting them in an appropriations bill where they don't belong
which results in them being protected from fillibusters. The net result is Kerry needs 51 votes rather than 41 (they need 60 to shut off a fillibuster).

14. I'm wondering about an amendment
Whether there will be something to remove it from the budget bill or how it's going to get taken out. I agree, I wish I understood the exact procedure needed because we do have to pass a budget, pile of shit that it is.

18. Just called!
They probably won't listen, but at least, I got to annoy them again.

This is kinda funny, but a few months back, I had been sending so many letters and e-mails to Senator Gregg's office that I got a letter back thanking me for contacting him on X, Y and Z issues. My replies got combined because I sent so many! It was hysterical.

The people who send out the letters must have my name on a hit list by now.
