Rosa Parks statue bill signed today - Photo here
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:06 PM by Mass

President Bush signs a bill Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, authorizing a statue of civil rights leader Rosa Parks be placed in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall. Left to right are Secretary of H.U.D. Alphonso Jackson, first lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Cong. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Sen. Thad Cochran, R - Miss. (AP Photo/Ron Edmonds)

Question: Is Kerry that much taller than Jackson and Rice or is it that Cochran and him were on a stage?

1. He's more in the foreground maybe?
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:14 PM by TayTay
I think it's just cuz of the angle. (Although the desk in front is steady. Maybe the others were further back. Maybe my esteemed Jr. Senator just wanted to make sure * was really signing the Rosa Parks Bill and hadn't sliped in someting else.)

Nice going! I think it was 50 years ago today, that Mrs. Park refused to stand up and move from her seat. Wow!

2. Thanks for posting.
I'm glad JK (and others) fought for this to happen!

The first thing I noticed about the photo too was how much taller he appears than everyone else. I thought at yesterday's press conference it was so striking how much taller he is than Jack Reed. When Kerry was standing behind the podium he TOWERED over Reed, but when Reed was standing behind the podium, Kerry was still taller. (I know he's tall, but still.)

Now that I question everything you do?

Apparently, the reporters had fun taking these pictures. Not sure it was that much fun for Kerry.

I get that, "Would you buy a used car from this man?' vibe as well. No, I most certainly would not. The oil would leak, the transmission would only last until I got home and the whole thing would fall apart soon there after.

32. Au Contraire, I think Sen. Kerry was enjoying this immensely.
He was wearing that gorgeous blue suit with THE tie. Nice silver hair as opposed to the dingy yellow-gray Shrub scrub. He looked good and he knew it. I'll bet he loved having the opportunity to stand next to Shrub to show the bozo up. And he certainly did that!

38. Okay, is Bush wearing lifts today or what
Cuz I could have sworn that Sen. Kerry was much taller than him at the debates. I think the Shrub had lifts in his shoes to be taller in that top pic. Figures. Artifically enhancing his features in order to measure up again.

I absolutely love the way Sen. Kerry went outside and trashed Bush and his fake Iraq news story policy and other stuff after this meeting. I think this was a good day.

19. AP report
http://www.wtopnews.com/index.php?nid=116&sid=636836

The good news (that is if the Congress follow suit.

Bush credited Parks for helping to "set in motion a national movement for equality and freedom."

"Eventually the civil rights movement would succeed in persuading Congress to pass more sweeping legislation that dealt with voting rights and discrimination in public places, and school segregation," said the president. "And the United States Congress should renew the Voting Rights Act of 1965."

And about Kerry

Bush warmly greeted the bill's sponsors, including Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., and his 2004 opponent for the presidency, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. Bush and Kerry repeatedly shook hands and exchanged whispered pleasantries. "Thanks for coming," Bush could be heard telling his one-time rival.

Kerry said the ceremony transcended the differences between him and the president. "This was a woman who really gave life to our Constitution, gave life to the promise of our country in ways that very few people get a chance to do," he said.

Interestingly, some papers have the AP release without the quote from Kerry.

34. Just turned on c-span at random
(was sick of Chris Matthews) and caught the end of the informal press conference outside after the ceremony.

Kerry was magnificent, and it was wonderful to see the respect with which hwe was treated by those reporters.

Best question, "Senator Kerry, do you ever find youself asking yourself 'How did I lose to this guy?'"

Kerry laughed and answered, "No, I know how I lost."

36. I caught it too, by chance
Magnificent is exactly the right word, Whome.

I was thinking as I watched--here is our president at last--only one year late. Cause it seems like he is stepping up to fill a vacuum left by our so-called "leadership" in the WH. He is giving people answers about Iraq and showing the way. He's offering the moral leadership that America needs. He's experienced and comfortable in that role--truth to power--maybe more than most in the Senate.

Sure, some won't listen, but if he had become president it would have been the same thing. The naysayers would have still been there. But the press seemed very friendly toward him and at-ease, as shown by that question you mentioned. It was great--and shows a Kerry that journalists feel comfortable around--an approachable guy you don't need to be afraid of offending.

31. According to raw_story, Kerry should have hi-jacked the ceremony
to declare that the election was stolen. At least I imagine this is what this article is about, because, if not, I fail to see what the point is, and clearly, many people on LBN understood it the same way.

Kerry blames election loss on Sept. 11 attacks

RAW STORY

Asked by a reporter outside the White House today what cost him the election, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) gave a terse reply, RAW STORY can reveal.

"9/11," Kerry said.

Cox News Service has filed a story for delivery Friday, detailing Kerry's comments outside the White House where he had been invited to watch President Bush sign a resolution calling for a Rosa Parks statue at the Capitol. Kerry "refused further analysis" about his loss
