Kick!
BTW, Senator, I thank you for this, most profoundly:
"This hall and this Commonwealth have always been at the forefront of seeking out and living out the truth in the conduct of public life. Here Massachusetts defined human rights by adopting our own Bill of Rights; here we took a stand against slavery, for women's suffrage and civil rights for all Americans. The bedrock of America's greatest advances-the foundation of what we know today are defining values-was formed not by cheering on things as they were, but by taking them on and demanding change."

11. Once is simply NOT enough. I'LL certainly watch again. Amazing. |
|
I also want to print the transcript to further study. So succinct, to-the-point, passionately true. I believe it will go down in history among the best political speeches of all time...(i.e., "I have a dream" speech).
The right speech, the right Man, at the right time...
Go JK! No defeat, no surrender!

5. It was even better the second time around! |
|
So now Cspan has aired the speech during the morning, early evening and prime time. Hopefully that means that everyone who watches Cspan on a regular basis has now had the opportunity to see it at least once (or thrice). Of course if they want to air it again I know at least two dozen people who would gladly watch!

7. And, according to the CSPAN crawl, they WILL air it one more time tonight! |
|
1:05 or thereabouts, EST. Which should be good for people on Pacific time, or night owls elsewhere. :-)

Several times his mouth started to smile (in response to all of the wild cheers, etc.) and he stopped himself, because this was, after all a serious speech about a serious subject. But it betrayed his heartfelt response to and connection with the audience. Aww...
Also, a few other thoughts: This is Kerry's entirely appropriate response to 2006 Iraq. In 2004, he would not have made this speech, politically expedient or not, because he was not ready to give up on the chance that the plan would or could work out somehow. With better leadership we know it would have, even if it was a bad idea from the get-go. But now the window of opportunity is gone, the troops have done what they can, and it's up to Iraq.
It's no wonder some of the lefties are upset by this speech--JK has made the Iraq issue his own, making speeches and statements by others(their favorites)look rather weak and incomplete. I may be a bit biased, but who's going to top this? Who's been an anti-war activist longer? ;)

10. It goes beyond that - He has taken the whole set of issues |
|
around dissent, including all the spying, spreading disinformation and all the constitutional issues, such almost eliminating any checks and balances.
Those are the key Feingold issues - and I can see their point, Feingold has been against all these things from the beginning. It's interesting in that I think if you could get both of them to answer on the most basic units of anything, they likely would be pretty much in agreement. But when they're combined into bills, Kerry weighs the whole thing and seems to vote for it if there's more good than bad. Feingold will vote against something, even if over-all it is good, if one piece is sufficiently bad. (This may be based to much on a few recent bills) But on confirmations, where the constitution does give the Senate a say, he almost always votes yes.
But this also shows that Feingold may have a huge problem in the general election because although the Iraq war is extremely unpopular, I would guess that there will still be the need to convince people that you are strong enough to protect the country. (Oddly, Kerry might be the only "anti-war" alternative who can do this.)
I think the flack out there is that this is the speech Feingold should have given - minus the VN piece. The strange thing is while they speak of Kerry's lack of speaking ability and connection, no one else could have either connected better or spoken better here. It was a self selected friendly crowd, but that's the case everywhere. Also, people here from the primaries indicated that Kerry was the 5th favorite - after Dean, Clark, Kuchinich and Edwards.

His over-arching theme was needing honesty and truth, in direct contrast to the Bushies' dishonest lying and spinning in order to justify even worse acts.
And here is where he's trumped Feingold. He not only bashes what's wrong, he outlines what is right and reminds people of what America is supposed to be. He reaches back into our elementary school lessons and reminds us about what has made America as great as has been historically. He's simply better at this than Feingold, although I'm sure Russ's ideas are just as true.
I was thinking about this last night. We have many good Dems, and Feingold is certainly one of them. But then we have a few "Alpha-Dems"--Kennedy, Kerry, Bill Clinton, Gore, etc. When one of them steps up, they are able to just blow everyone else away because they are that skilled. That's what happened on Saturday; the other ones may be good, but they aren't great. Like the saying goes: "the cream rises to the top". It makes some people upset (Feingold supporters), but that's the way it is.
