Webb opposes troop withdrawal
Aargh, this doesn't look good to me. In another article, he was sticking with "make something good of Iraq", like Hackett did. I really don't like the arrogant tone either, like if he'd been in Congress he would have been able to convince people to agree with the Republicans?? Maybe someone should call his campaign and point them in the direction of the Iraq Peace Plan, and remind him that he's supposed to be running as a Democrat because he disagrees with Republicans.

"I don't think an artificial timeline emanating from the Congress is a workable concept," said Webb, who is challenging U.S. Sen. George Allen (R). "Honestly, if I were in the Senate, I would have been able to talk to people about perhaps different ways of looking at this."

1. Yeah, I read this in my paper, too.
Look, Virginia is not Connecticut, and I have no reason to believe that Webb isn't speaking sincerely. He has always had this position, and for a campaign, he should be cautious at this point. What I will not tolerate is him bashing more liberal Dems like Kerry. So far he hasn't.

Re: the Iraq Peace Plan -- see thread. The main insurgent groups have rejected the plan, so this is only the beginning, not the end of the negotiating process.

2. Oh I don't doubt that
I'm sure he is speaking sincerely, I just don't know how much good having him in the senate is going to be is all. I much prefer supported the war and now I oppose it, to - opposed the war but now we have to stay there whether the Iraqis want us or not. It was very discouraging to read that, seems like there had to be a hundred better ways to present his view than to basically say he's going to reign in those rascally Democrats.

This is the thing that frustrates me about southern Democrats. How can there ever be change if a Democrat never really stands up and tells his fellow citizens that change is necessary.

3. The Dem running in my congressional district is even worse
than Webb in his absolutely muddled position on Iraq. Look, I'm in Pat Robertson country with major military here. Right now the Dems are in the minority, and I think Webb is a bitter pill we must swallow if we want to try to win back the Senate. No matter what, Harry Reid will run the show, and he's no big lib either. And, you know, my take on differing Dem positions is that we're the party REALLY grappling with Iraq while the Republicans just parrot catchy phrases like "cut and run" while never revealing what exactly Bush's plan is in Iraq. Right now, that's the most we can get.
