Kerry in town for Granholm campaign
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 02:41 PM by globalvillage
Valerie Olander / The Detroit News

U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is in town today to help Gov. Jennifer Granholm as she prepares for the final 100 days of her re-election campaign.

Kerry joined Granholm and her husband, Dan Mulhern, at a 10 a.m. worship service at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit

They are expected to lunch at Honest John's Bar and Grill on Selden Street in Detroit and then, onto a 1:30 p.m. rally at Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 98 in Madison Heights.

1. I can't imagine how he does it either
I like the name of the lunch location - Honest John's bar and grill!

2. I was at the rally in Madison Heights.
If I'd known he was going to be at Honest John's, I would have gone there, too! That was my old hangout when I was a bit younger and a lot rowdier.
Anyway...
He was wonderful. I sat right in front of where he was standing during his speech. What a sincere yet funny, passionate and obviously compassionate man. It really makes a difference when you can look right into someone's eyes when they speak. He feels and believes what he says. And, how refreshing, everything he had to say was the truth and based on facts. I knew he was "The Real Deal" before, but after today, I feel it. This is a man who truly cares about this country. So smart, so caring. So Presidential.
It may sound silly, but at one point I started to tear up, just thinking about how different things would be, if only the will of the people had prevailed. Granholm made a reference in her intro about "our President". If only it was so.
I know I'm not telling you folks here anything you don't already know, but I just wanted to share my experience with people I knew would appreciate it the most.

3. Thanks so much
for sharing your experience. Don't feel silly, I tear up a lot when I think of how different things would be right now with a President Kerry.

He most definitely is the "Real Deal". I wish every American could meet him.

4. OMG, livvy
I did the same thing. When he walked into the room, I felt like it was 2004 again. The feeling was so electric and it was so emotional seeing him in person again, I started to tear up.

It was great seeing you again.

After the rally, I went to a fundraiser at Marie Donegan's with about 50 people and Kerry and Granholm. I actually got a chance to speak to both of them and get my picture taken. Here's a link to my photo album with today's events and a bunch of photos from yesterday in the field in Farmington with Nancy Skinner.

I came here to post my album in a new thread. I think I'll do that as well.

Oh, and by the way, I know he said it at the rally, but he also told me at Maries's -- he knows he won.

8. Thanks Livvy for checking in.
He can be quite good, really quite good when he is 'on.'

It's funny how the media wants so desperately for Sen. Kerry to be aloof, reserved and wooden. Yet we talk to people all the time who have actually been to speeches with the Senator or talked to him in smaller groups and they never mention those adjectives at all.

I have been Kerry watching for a long time now. I remember when he first ran for the Senate and you would talk to people about the race. I talked to 'lunch-bucket' Dems in Mass about 'this guy' and why they might want to throw him a vote. I learned way back then something that is true now, Kerry is not an easy person to listen to and he never will be. He is complicated and a vote for him was never just a gimme. (There is just too much there.) And you are not the first to relay that bit about the election and the questionable results to us. It is yet another confirmation of that belief. (Now, if the rest of the Dems could only understand this affects us all, sigh!)

He is a good guy and very down-to-earth. (Well, he better be. He represents all those 'lunch-bucket Dems' from Mass, the real people who have been voting for him since the early '80's, those people who live in older cities and made their livings working in factories or off of fishing boats or such. That was Kerry's longest and most loyal constituency in his home state. And he can talk to these good people, he has been doing so for years.

Thanks to you both for checking in and telling us about the visit to Michigan. (I hope he goes there again before the election this fall.) It was very nice of you.

Now, don't be a stranger around here. Come back in and post stuff. It's wonderful to hear from new people.

:patriot:

15. I used to post occasionally. I've gotten really involved in ...
election reform, so I spend a lot of time in that forum. Kerry is the main reason my interest focused there. I was so ticked off by what happened, and very sad as well.
I've seen some of the threads here about his good looks. Very fun, and now that I've seen him "up close and personal", I understand them much better, too. He is much better looking in person, then in photos. The camera does not appreciate his good looks!
I do hope he runs again. He deserves to be the official President, and we need him. Now is that an understatement, or what???

5. Thanks, livvy.
It doesn't sound silly. I have to hold back tears sometimes just watching floor speeches. Twice last week, as a matter of fact.
So great you got to attend. It does make a difference when you see Sen Kerry in person, doesn't it? I'm certaain he does believe what he says, and that he cares a great deal. It's pretty obvious to people who choose to listen with an open mind.
How is Grandholm doing? I've sent her some $, and I think I'll send a bit more today.
Thanks for the report!

9. Granholm is a spitfire, and has been a great Gov.
She is gearing up. I'm sure she appreciates every dime she gets. She is up against very big time money with DeVos, and very deep pretzelnut and malicious troop connections.
We are going to work very hard to get the real word out about DeVos. Many Michiganders don't know squat about him. They just know they're broke, out of work, and looking for someone to blame. DeVos equals a big loss for the average person in Michigan. They just don't know it...yet! Granholm told me that she had actually spoken to people who didn't realize DeLoss was a Republican. That's because he doesn't stress that little fact in his ads. It also shows how little people know about him.
I do think we have a fight ahead of us, because too many people are uninformed and have short memories. So that's where the grassroots groups have to concentrate their efforts, refreshing memories and showing them all the great accomplishments Granholm has achieved.
(Can you tell I'm geared up? It was a great rally!LOL) Go Granholm!

10. I saw your posts in the MI forum
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 09:26 PM by TayTay
Just to let you know, the topic of the good taller Sen from Mass not being too hard on the eyes has come up in this forum. Just a few times. Though not much recently because we are bereft of pictures threads lately. (Sigh! We are mundo seriouso lately. All wonk and no play makes Dem women grumpy. I keep saying that. We need a pic thread every Friday. Keeps the place fun.)

You are among friends here, you can let it out. That Kerry guy is one fine looking man. (Ahm, I seriously don't think we would have ever gotten to 95,000+ posts in this forum without occasionally mentioning that the good Senator is, ahm, tall and well-spoken and honest and, ahm, gorgeous. Then again, we do have a 10-1 women to men ratio in here for posters. Sigh!)

Let it out, if you can't tell us, safely in here, then you can't say it anywhere. (We have stories, btw. We can share.)

Roxbury, Mass, Oct 30, 2005. Yummy.

(Honest, I have seen enough pols in Mass to know the difference. Yummy.)

11. I sent her 20 bucks because I couldn't resist JK's email
Did you see the email John Kerry sent out to raise money for Granholm? It was so terrific I had to send her some cash.

12. I never got that e-mail WEL
I wonder if it was targeted to specific names on that huge list they have. I have gotten appeals for other candidates and I am on Casey's e-mail list, though I never signed up for it.

Hmmmmmm.

I donated from the link WEL posted because I couldn't find the e-mail.
I hope this isn't another e-mail problem like the last one.

It may be that the people managing the list find it better to send fewer appeals. Kerry is helping so many candidates. I would guess that if you send 3 million people say 10 fund raising letters a month, you might get less money in total than if you send 300,000 people 1 fund raising letter a month. In addition, the former could make cause more people to unsubscribe, put it in a spam filter list, or simply delete before reading. ( Between my husband and I we have verizon and aol)

14. Great letter! She really is an excellent Gov.
She cares about Michigan and it's people, and has worked really hard to improve things in the state. Who could ask for more?
It was obvious how much she liked Kerry, and it's equally obvious how much she dislikes the pretzelnut, and knows what's going on with this horrible misadministration.
Thanks so much for donating!
