St. Innocent's Russian Orthodox church
It's much too sunny and beautiful here today for dramatic picture-taking :), but here's one I took this morning anyway of some of the blue domes on the new Russian Orthodox church.

1. Yes, you're right.
Between the southwest in Alaska & this shot, I can see Alaska has no architecture. :eyes: Geesh.

2. Tomorrow I must go out
and take some pictures of our REAL "architecture." You'll see what I'm talking about. :)

3. "I feel intimidated. I may sit this one out"
:nopity:

Amazing color in both photos but if you're askin' me to pick, and you aint, I'd go with the one where you flew down to New Mexico. Yea, like I'm going to believe you're taking these in Alaska. I may be a stupid hick from Iowa but I didn't fall off the hay wagon yesterday.

4. Maybe I should add another choice to my poll...
...and title it Alaska in Washington.

One of the favorite movies of my youth -- both because of the comedy and because (as with so many guys I've encountered from that era who first saw it while on the cusp of puberty) I had a total crush on Andrea Dromm.

Hey, didn't I say before that Seattle is really Anchorage South?

Actually, that was taken in Wilkeson, a tiny, old-time coal mining community on the north slope of Mt. Rainier. I guess they must have had a large number of Russian miners working there at the turn of the last century. The church (Holy Trinity) is actually quite small, really little more than a large chapel.

As time went on, the congregation changed from local miners to Russian emigrees in the South Sound area, who weren't too happy about having to commute fifty-odd miles each way on Sundays. So they wound up building a new, larger church in Tacoma. The Wilkeson church building, although no longer holding services on a regular weekly basis, is still owned by the parish, and used for special occasions such as weddings and funerals, as well as two services for the entire Tacoma congregation each year on Epiphany and Pentecost.

11. I loved that movie, too,
although it's been so long since I've seen it that I've forgotten most of it. All I remember is that it was very, very funny. Jonathan Winters was in it, wasn't he? He always cracked me up. I was so excited to actually see him shopping in an outdoor Indian bazaar in Santa Barbara last summer, but I was too embarrassed to approach him. You never know how stars are going to react to adoring fans.

7. Wow!
I think I'm going to sit this one out. (Are you the one who's been pushing for the church theme?" :)

12. I think maybe I did vote for churches
when we had that choice. The churches are by far the prettiest buildings around here.

8. That lack of architecture
in AK is a pain. Love this pic too. Like every where else (unless it is really really old) looks like AK has your run of the mill buildings highlighted by beautiful ones.

10. That's very true...
I'm going to go out this morning and see if I can capture some of the more typical Anchorage ambience. It's really not an ugly city - just sort of thrown together.

14. I did.
Here's another view of the domes and a full view of the whole church - not optimal because of the backlighting. I was sorry that no one was there because I've heard the inside is beautiful.
