Nikon D80. Is it filtered against IR?
Bought a D80 yesterday. Sick of dealing with film at the airport and having them wrecked a second time at the lab. Anyway, it would be cool to shoot with an IR filter (one that allows only IR). Before getting one, I need to know if it is even possible. Does the D80 have integral IR filters (which exclude IR)?

1. According to CC Nikon is good to go
Can you borrow a filter from someone to try it out? The Hoya's and B&W's can get expensive... CC mentioned that Tiffen made one for less money.

I would disagree with my friend you lives "where they don't have shoulders on the damn roads" that says Cloudy Days are ok. Best results will be on bright sunny days. Just make sure you have the camera pointed no where near the sun or you'll get some nasty lens flaring (from the filter attached).

I fuck up so you don’t have to. It’s what I do best.
:dunce:

What I do is "think" of the sun as a one or several really big flashlights that are illuminating my subject. On the pic above I was trying to use the big flashlight to light the one side of the stream while keeping the foreground "in the dark". I turned too far into the sun....:crazy:

2. I'm going to wait a while to get one.
The cost of the camera set me back a bit. I went into the shop to buy a Pentax K100, but my wife liked the ergonomics of the Nikon better. They stopped carrying the D70, so we went with the D80. We also bought a Sigma 18-125 zoom instead of the kit lens. Nice lens outdoors or with a flash, but pretty slow. I might get a f/1.8 fixed-length 50mm for indoors and portraits. That would be a short telephoto.

Who's CC anyway?

I know for good IR pix you need bright sunlight. I shot a roll of IR film once. Geez, what a pain.

3. I still have an IR filter that should fit my Nikon;
but I only used it (analog, years before) together with an IR film. If I have time, I check it out tomorrow and will post some of the results - if it's working at all.

I used to do both b&w and color IR photography, and if I get a negative/slide scanner once, I might post a few of them. The color ones I shot were mostly nude photography, but I might find some suitable for posting.

and D200 are great at infrared but not sure about the D80 though I would guess it would do a great job too unless Nikon suddenly changed their filter.

You can test your camera to see no matter what make.

The simple way to tell if your camera is going to see IR is to take a TV or VCR infrared remote control and point it at your camera. Push a button on it and look on the LCD for a spot of light. You should be able to see a point of light. If you do, you will be able to shoot IR images with your camera.

BTW I am CC. Have a Nikon and because of F. Gordon discovered IF and have fallen in love with it. I have both a Hoya and Tiffin filter. The tiffin was a present, the Hoya I bought on ebay for a very good price. :hi: I haven't been around much and won't be until we are finished kitchen renovation hell.
