Election Day in Anchorage
Here are a few pictures from election day here. It was a beautiful crisp cold day, about 12 degrees. HullBoss and I spent about three hours out on a busy corner campaigning with Diane Benson and a bunch of other people.

Here is another dog for Tony Knowles...

Our Democratic candidate for Congress, Diane Benson

With a couple of supporters

Some enthusiastic Tony Knowles (for governor) supporters. On their chests they had painted VOTE 4.

Here's our Republican gubernatorial candidate, eventual winner, Sarah Palin, after giving cudos to Tony's supporters. DU's Larissa calls Sarah "Wasilla Barbie." She's pretty conservative socially, but she seems pleasant enough, so I'm going to withhold judgment for the time being

Diane and a friend sharing a cartoon from a local paper. Don Young refused to campaign against Diane and would cancel appearances at functions if he found out she was going to be present. The cartoon says "I'm not avoiding Diane Benson, she's just never where I happen to be."

Cheering fans at "Election Central."

We pretty much knew we had lost by this point, but Diane was still happy for her 40% showing. This was a 100% grassroots campaign, and I loved working with these people. I hope Diane runs again in two years.

This is Ethan Berkowitz, Tony Knowles' running mate, with Tony and their wives on the left. Ethan was formerly my state representative, a really good Democrat. My guess is he will run for governor next time around.

1. Oh, dear, I said "cudos"...
That's what happens when you try to post at night after typing 90 pages during the day. I'm not really that ignorant. :)

2. Excellent photo-docu and "kudos" to you and Hullboss
:patriot:

Dems are having big party here in a couple of weeks. I'll try to get some snaps. It was bitter sweet round' here cause our state House Dem and Congress Dem both lost. We live in Tom "Kill the Mexicans" Tancredo's district.... say no more. :eyes: Sucks that Diane lost up your way.

We need to get together before I take the long nap. You can show me how to take a decent Landscape snap and I'll help you with your peep snaps. At the risk of sounding like a Golfer (and no, I don't golf).. "hand me the 7 Iron"... I would have used the 100mm f/2.8 or the 50mm f/1.8 -- Now I'll cut ya' some slack on the outdoors photos because trying to fuss with camera settings in 12 degree weather while wearing Hockey Goalie Gloves is a real hassle.

The 100mm f/2.8 would have been perfect. I know you're fond of the IS zoom but the 100mm would have given you a good focal length to work with and it would have bumped up your speed. Photo #8 was shot at 1/6 sec. That's waaaaay slow even with IS. I'm not pickin' on ya.. it's just that I've had too much coffee this morn'. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

My fave photographs are 2 & 6 because they show the personality of the "subject".

3. Oh, that's fine...
I just had the one lens on (17-85) because it's relatively small and versatile. I didn't even have any other lenses with me, so I just did the best I could with what I had. The photos were really kind of secondary to the main focus of the day, anyway, which was to get out the vote and support Diane.

My condolences on the Tancredo thing. :(

4. Hey, shouldn't you be typing something?

I figured photography was taking a back seat to the events of the day for you. But in the future young lady....

Tancredo is pure slime. He fits right in with the * bunch. Apparently he sent out flyers to his "base" saying that Winter (the Dem) was a liberal commie who hung out with Pelosi. Winter has never even met Pelosi. The only good thing was that polling numbers forced Tancredo to come back to Colorado from his speaking engagements at "Kill the Mexicans" rallies and actually "run" (this district is usually a lock for pukes') and spend some of his spare change.

7. I am now officially done with the typing...
...at least for a couple of days. I told Gaylene I didn't care HOW much of a jam she's in, DO NOT CALL ME. Between the time we got back from our trip to the Southland on October 17 until today, I have typed 1,671 pages of court transcript. Whew....

6. This is a great thread, Blue.
I'm so sorry Diane lost. I know you worked really hard for her and had such high hopes. But garnering 40% of the vote is quite a feat nonetheless. and you're right--in two years she'll be prime to win.

9. Thanks. I miss Diane already.
It's not very often that a candidate comes along that I can support so whole-heartedly. I'm just praying that she'll still have the "heart" for it in two years. It's hard to say how she'll be feeling by 2008, especially if we are well on our way out of Iraq, because that was a large part of her motivation to run for national office this year. I do hope she'll consider it because she had so many good ideas over and above the war thing.

I don't know if I mentioned here that her son, who lost both his legs in Iraq just last November, handcycled his way to a finish in the New York marathon this year. Diane was so proud election night to tell us that. I think it says a lot about what kind of a person she is by the quality of the son she raised. It was such an honor to work in this campaign.
