Wild Turkeys
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 12:21 AM by BrightKnight

I shot these near Amarillo, TX last month.

--------
Do we get to choose the national turkey now? I nominate the guy in the last picture. I would like to see Chimpy try to mess around with him.

2. hunting
There is absolutely no skill involved in "hunting" turkey.

The meat looks like it would be a lot better that the stuff they sell in stores. I wish that someone would farm free range wild turkeys.

There is also very little skill involved in deer hunting. In poor rural areas I think that many people are just hunting because they need the meat. Culling the largest and most attractive deer every year cannot be good for the population.

----------
Trying to get an interesting photograph of a wild animal is very challenging. They always run away when you try to get close to them. They don't hold still and they don't hang out in bright sun lit areas. Being a professional wildlife photographer would be a tough way to make a living.

3. Those are great shots.
I've been trying to get some wild turkey shots with no luck. This is about as closest I've gotten.

I'm glad you posted them. It is very difficult to take good wildlife shots. That guy at the bottom is not someone to be messed with.

9. cold feet
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 07:12 PM by BrightKnight
That is an interesting photograph.

I'm guessing that the white powder is that stuff called snow. We don't see much of that down here. I'll bet that bird has cold feet.

I would love to see a wild turkey in winter feathers.

In north central Arkansas I saw a skunk of all things in a new pristine white winter coat. He crawled off before I could grab my camera. I thought it was a good idea not to try to chase after him.

5. W. L. Weller & I. W. Harper
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 02:32 PM by BrightKnight
For Bourbon I have always preferred W. L. Weller or I. W. Harper. Wild Turkey is a bit too wild for my taste.

My Granddad liked it. I have fond memories of sipping Wild Turkey with him on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

7. Chimpy's bottle is filtered
Unlike Bourbon, "Tennessee" whiskey is filtered through a bed of sugar maple charcoal.

He apparently really loves that bottle. I would not leave them alone together.

10. bigger and healthier
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 08:07 PM by BrightKnight
Your birds are apparently bigger and healthier than the ones I photographed. The North West Texas desert is a difficult place for anything to make a living.

I did not have much luck getting a group shot. I herded them into a creek bed but they were not interested in any photo ops.
