1. I'm starting to feel smug...
The next submission will cure that, no doubt.

6. Yes...?
I was going to post something from Ruby Beach, but you beat me to it!

No, I didn't. My photo was from First Beach, about sixteen miles up the coast.

If you recall, both times I visited Ruby this past summer, it was completely fogged-in.

Very nice photos, BTW, especially the second one. It gives me an idea of what I should have been seeing there, had I been able to see anything at all! ;-)

it's your turf, you should get first dibs on the Pacific Northwest regardless. ;) Yours is a stunning shot, far better than either of mine. That sunburst is perfectly framed, and the color is extraordinary.

I loved Ruby Beach. It seemed like the place where the trees go to die.

8. I miust admit that you and regnaD kciN are my two (well. two of) favorite
photographers in this forum. Everybody here teaches me something and produces work I admire, but since you two do your work on my home turf I am especially impressed by the images you capture. "Been there," but never even "saw" what you two show. Makes me feel like a blind man. Don't get me wrong -- I like the work I do, but you both show me how much I have not even noticed.

9. I can't really claim to work your turf.
I've been to the Pacific Northwest twice in my life, and only once waaaaaaaay out to the Olympic Peninsula. But I know what you mean. Blue and I have shot the same events twice now, and I'm always amazed at how differently our unique perspectives and styles come out in our images. It IS like seeing your own life through someone else's eyes.

I didn't have that many photos to use for this theme. It's a crap shoot. But somebody will win. I am still blown away by the top two photos in the Nov. seasonal. Cobalt Violet and Gray Warrior, fantastic pics!! I have a fall fetish, admittedly. Thank GOD my dad lives in New Hampshire!

And, it is always a crap shoot for non pros, like me.

I took the camera out into the greenhouse just yesterday morning to try and 'get' some silhouettes.
Got these few before Hobbs the thirsty feline appeared.

Actually, in true crap shoot fashion this first one is my new fave:

Think I *will* frame that one. It is my desktop at the moment and even the normally don't notice much Mom does teens have appreciated it.

Condensation on the glass reflected in the water.
Just a big, black bucket that I keep about a dozen goldfish in during the Winter- and use the water- with all the goldfish poop for free fertilizer - to water and feed the plants in the greenhouse all Winter... old fishing net floats from some yard sale....

This is what I mean when I say I agree with the crap shoot concept! You can just be blown away by the image you to capture.

Your windmill is beautiful! I swear, where I love here in Central CA, there are so many of these, as well as old pump houses and dying barns, I keep telling myself am going to start going out getting pics of these before they disappear.

I recently moved, (moving sucks!! sometimes...), haven't had time to take new photos and just found the computer cable to my camera yesterday, so had to go to my archived photos. That particular windmill was on some property in Oklahoma owned by a friend. The property was being sold, so we went out there just for photos on a cold november day. I took that photo with just a regular run-of-the-mill 35mm film camera. I also took this photo there with that camera the same day (photo entered into one of the previous forum contests)

19. Birds must like me or something
because they seem to make their own shots. It was hell trying to think of a name for it though. That was in Old New Castle, DE and I did have my camera out and on, the rest was pure luck. I burned lots of pics to CD and could not find the original silhouette shot I wanted to use.

The Get Your Ducks in a Row was taken at The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. If you haven't hopped over there maybe sometime when you have time and need something to cheer you up you can head that way. I know they had damage and all but heard they were open. They even let Guard troops in free for a while because the animals missed their people.

20. I keep meaning to get over there.
I heard that the elephants, in particular, were depressed after the storm, and seemed elated when the zoo re-opened. I wish I could find that news story for when I do my blessing of the animals service in a few months.

Will this month's contest be not only in GD, but in the Lounge as well?

If in the Lounge, am betting that Hobbs and Resident Mute Swan get a lot of votes. I know both of those would be difficult for me to choose between should they be in the same prelim thread.

Have always been fascinated by swans, and that particular photo is stunning. Excellent job, Cobalt Violet!

26. jhain, what is that maroon plant your photo?
Does Hobbs eat it? I first saw that type of plant at my favorite vegetarian Chinese restaurant in Boston a few weeks ago. They are such beautiful plants. My problem is that one of my cats(the one in my sig. line) loves to eat many kinds of plants. My other cat eats none.

BTW I really love your photo. There is a lot of interesting stuff going on in that shot.

Bugger just stuck his fat cat head in the frame...as he is wont to do.

The plant is:
Oxalis Triangularis (Purple Shamrock)

Alas, it is classified as piosonous:
http://www.aspca.org/site/DocServer/toxbrief_1202.pdf?docID=461&AddInterest=1101

My cats are outside most of the time so they rarely bother the inside plants

28. greywarrior, why'd you change your submission?
I like both the shots, but I liked your first shot better because of the kid in the tree. S/he gave the shot perspective and that presence told a story. The second shot is pretty and well-composed/balanced, but it just doesn't have that evocative feel the first shot had for me.

That's the two cents from the peanut gallery. :-)

I PM'd superconnected and asked her to stay with the original. I cannot tell you the debates that have gone on in my house about those two photo's. Neighbors actually got pulled into it and friends from across the country. First photo seems to have hit a nerve with some of them, have no idea why, but they are insistant that I keep that one.

The first one is evocative. The second one is descriptive - beautifully so - but the first one takes me right back to childhood way down South. So my opinion may be a little biased, but I just connected with the image right away.

Meeting Dariel Perez was one of the highlights of my Havana trip. A 24-year-old student who knew six languages even though he had never left Cuba. We became friends.

I recently sent him a 12x8 of that photo as well as a 12x8 print of this photo. Both are going in the portfolio I'm putting together.

I also sent him a 4x6 of the one below, which is just a snapshot and not getting anywhere near my portfolio. He's on the right. The guy on the left is a French guitarist who spoke some English, but no Spanish.

A day earlier, none of us knew each other. Despite the cultural and language differences, we bonded through our creative spirit.

We will be proceeding to the preliminary round.

2 days will be the length of voting for the preliminary round.

I'm deciding whether to allow 3 days for the final round since people will likely be away for thanks giving and we wont get much voting...hence an extra day. Still I expect voting to be pretty sparse this week.

Hey all, good entries!

I was worried we wouldn't have enough silhouettes. You guys came through!
