Flowers in my yard.
I used an overlay at 22% on both images.

I might remove that petal on the bottom right, but it does seem to move the eye to the center. Not sure yet.

My thanks to Maplethorpe for showing us that flowers can be beautiful in Black and White.

1. Very impressive...
Are these digital photos? If so, I'd be curious to know your technique for monochrome conversion. From what I've seen, and my own experiments, I have been rather unimpressed with grayscale conversions from digital color images. Even extracting the lightness channel in Lab mode, or using Photoshop's channel mixer to balance the color channels in monochrome, gives me a result that doesn't come close to the grayscale you get from a good 35mm B&W image. Your photos are the first I've seen that really compare.

3. Thanks. I shoot RAW or the largest JPEG settings. I do the
conversion in PS by changing mode. I used unsharp mask and sharpen edges. Levels were used to add dramatic effect. I then did an overlay to darken the image.

I used a Canon S50 5 MP camera.

Be sure to use unsharp mask after resizing.

It's still not up to 35mm standards but it good for the web.

7. Thanks. Yeah, that picture seemed to work.
If I had to choose between color and B&W I would have to choose B&W.
