Homer, Alaska - my new Smugmug gallery
Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 02:46 AM by Blue_In_AK
We spent four days in Homer last weekend with all three of my brothers and their wives, doing the "family bonding" thing. The guys all went halibut fishing, and I took pictures. :) Here are a few and the link to the gallery (not captioned yet, but I'll get around to it when I'm not so busy).

(Do these look too big to you guys?)

1. Beautiful, beautiful pictures.
I especially like all of your boat pictures. Those boats sure tell a story. Hmmmm . . . and can I meet you at the Salty Dog Saloon for a nice cold one - LOL.

Did the guys have good luck fishing?

5. Everybody limited...
which is two fish each this season. None were particularly large, averaged right around 30 pounds or so, but Captain Pete says those are the best eating, so we were happy. HullBoss ended up with about 18 pounds of filets for our freezer. They also got a fair amount of Pacific cod, and my daughter and her family came back with about 250 razor clams, of which she's giving us about 10 pounds. I see seafood chowder in our future. :)

2. Great gallery, Blue.
And it looks like that 16-35 is a splendid addition to your arsenal, put to very good use.

4. I actually ended up with the 17-40
which does as much as I want it to for about half the price. It does take great wide-angle shots and I had a lot of fun with it.

8. Even better for the cost-effectiveness then.
Very nice.

9. I have the 24-70 for speed
so I didn't really think I needed another fast wide-angle.

3. Wow, still lots of snow, ours is almost gone
But then again, I haven't been up to the higher elevations lately.

Photo #2 is gorgeous. Now I have to look Homer up on google maps.

It's hard not to take beautiful pictures down there. It's just a gorgeous little town. The top picture of the rainbow and many of the shots in the gallery of the glaciers and mountains across the bay (and the moose) were taken from my brother's deck. He and his family lived in a tiny cabin down there, with minimal facilities, for several years, but just last fall were able to purchase this cute little house on two acres -- with the wonderful view, now that he's cleared out much of the alder in front. I'm really happy for them, but just a wee bit jealous. :) At least we know we've always got a place to stay when we head down that way.

Could you use some alder chips to smoke your fish? I know where you can get some FREE.

12. To any who have not yet viewed the whole gallery -
do it now! If you want lessons in composition, look carefully and imagine what might have been the poorer result if Blue had stepped a few feet to the left or right or been at that location and aimed the camera differently or in many cases some time earlier or later.

To Blue. You truly have an artist's eye. You've shown this from the beginning and now you have developed the technical skills needed to fully express and share that talent. A word of praise to HullBoss for seeing that talent and making sure you had the gear to best express/share it.

One (maybe) suggestion. Maybe it is just my antique monitors, bu t there is very little detail in the darker areas of your first image and many of the first several in the gallery. More shadow detail is visible in the pix at the end of the gallery. I assume the lighting conditions changed, but your editing program should be able to bring up a bit more color and detail in those areas if you would want to do that.

13. Thank you so much, Cons.

As I've said many times before, your critiques and suggestions over the years now (wow, has it been that long?!) have been of immense value to me learning this craft, especially your technical guidelines. If you remember, I didn't know aperture from a hole in the ground; ISO, f-stop, all a mystery, so I have really appreciated the wisdom you have shared.

I'll see what I can do about those dark foregrounds. Maybe I can improve them some.

ed. And a shout-out also to technical wizards, F. Gordon and regnaD kciN. :yourock:

15. Glad to be of use. You've taught me as well,
and I think all in this forum have learned something from one another. It's one of those sharing things. You share your pics, we all gain. Others share their tips, we all gain. No one loses anything by sharing, unlike the capitalist vision of society where everything that might help another is kept secret (proprietary, DMCA, eternal copyrights and patents, etc) unless the "owner" is paid to release that information or resource to that one paying client (prohibiting any sharing beyond that individual client). We have a little communalist refuge here.

14. They aren't big at all...just right.
I love the old boat pic. Cons is right. You have an artist's eye for sure. I will check out the whole gallery soon.
