I'm no good with the Nerodia species but maybe check out enature.com, go to reptiles, snakes, or just do a search for Nerodia in the zip code in question and see what you think. Off the top I'm guessing Nerodia sipedon but please don't take it as gospel.
P.S. Great photo.

It's definitely a water species and not skittish really. It wasn't really paranoid of people at all. There were at least 4 or 5 people around when I took the photo watching the snake :).

13. Yup, I think that's it :) |
|
It was probably just the lighting, but mine was redder on the red areas than this one though :)

14. Nerodia species are quite variable as to color |
|
I don't know if it is the lighting, it could be that your snake was actually redder. Looking at the pattern though, I'm leaning toward N. sipedon myself though.

4. Great photos, but Ewwwww......... |

Not a snake fan here -- another reason why I love Alaska. No snakes in our great state.

7. You're really getting into this foto stuff |
|
I have no idea if there is a Snakes Quarterly, but if there were.. this sequence of photographs looks like it would be in the feature story.
You've shared an incredible number of great photographs today. I'm very impressed.

All of these were just from hiking around, no special effort.
I just happen to live in an area that is extrmely conducive to animal photography :).
You only have to worry after I get my 50-500 lens and the 2x teleconverter :).
Actually I'm waivering between a 50-500 and an 80-400 stabilized lens. One has longer reach, the other has the stabilization. Both are the same price (or close enough to call it the same). I'm just trying to decide which would serve me better.
