A few random shots from the 50th Anniversary celebration.
A huge banner replicating the front page of the Anchorage Daily Times on January 3rd, 1959, was hung from ceiling to floor in the foyer of the convention center.

or as the wild salmon put it:

The third floor of the convention center.

The outdoor third-floor deck. This is where a lot of us watched the fireworks.

The view from the southwest corner

The view from the southeast corner.

1. My dear Blue!
Ah, these are wonderful...

And everywhere are the snowy mountains!

The colors in your pics are just amazing...

Thank you, and congrats to your state on its 50th anniversary!

3. I love peeking at your pictures of AK
It is so pretty up there, and your pictures definitely do justice to your beautiful state. One question though... is it really as cold as it looks in the pictures. I'm sitting here with my teeth chattering just thinking of how cold it must be!!! :)

:hi: from Sunny San Diego!!

4. Yes, it's been very, very cold.

Anchorage hasn't been above zero in about a week, and the high pressure isn't expected to break until Thursday or so, which will make this the third longest cold snap in Anchorage's history. It was about 10 below, the day of the celebration.
http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/642669.html "The coldest spot in Alaska on Sunday? In the Interior. The O'Brien Creek area along the Taylor Highway recorded minus 65."

Compared to that, it's balmy here.

Here's the thermometer on my deck Friday night.

6. OMG! I don't think they even sell those kind of thermometers down here!!
LOL... -60 degrees!! Umm, I couldn't even fathom... I still want to go to Alaska though, so it won't keep me back. Do you get the Aurora Borealis up there?

7. Yes, we do,
but it's best out away from Anchorage and the city lights. We saw a beautiful display in Fairbanks last March.
