*** JANUARY PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST - RESULTS ***
It is with great pleasure that I announce the (runaway) winner for January's Photo Contest...

Second place goes to...

Blue_In_AK

...for Bus stop, No Takers.

:yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:

Third place honors go (by a single vote!) to...

...for one is the loneliest ....

:applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:

Since I found it impossible to choose between these two images, I'm going to break with tradition and declare this month's "Host's Award" a tie between Night Moves, by bvar22...

...and Tenderness on the Block (in memory of Warren Zevon), by JeffR.

:applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:  :bounce: :applause: :yourock:

The final standings:

1. Congratulations to EVERY entrant!
In my years here, I don't remember a monthly contest where ALL of the entries achieved the level of excellence this one did. The formidable emotional impact of "Someone.." subject matter may tend to mask the FACT (imho, of course) that such excellence was far more common than might be thought by the voting results.

Color me IMPRESSED! Wow.

2. I'm still blown away by Bvar's car.
That is SUCH a cool shot, and much better than mine, IMO.

14. The bus stop is a cool shot too.
Like mth44sc's photo, it has a sense of waiting. It reminds me of my bus stop. It's very nostalgic.

3. Just so many great entries in this contest it was crazy.
But to see 3 of my favorites in the top spots, plus sharing Host's Choice with the great Night Moves, is really satisfying.

Great contest!

4. Congratulations everyone!
All of the photos in this contest were really amazing. They didn't get nearly the love (ie votes) they deserved.

Next round is on me.

cheers! :toast:

5. Congrats Tindalos with the run away win!
A lot going on in that photo, even in the dogs face. Love it! The clear winner. There were so many good pictures I'm honored to have come in 4th.

What's the next contest, pictures of your shoe prints over the rest of us? :-)

6. Forgot to say to Tindalos!!!!!!!!111111111111
Despite the wealth of great photos in this contest, this one was the deserved winner. It tells such an immediate sad story to the viewer, but then leaves so much more to the imagination, terribly unnerving things. It's an achingly sad yet beautiful love story, hard to look at and hard to turn away from.

that just blew me away...

One of the most loving and sad photos I've ever seem.

Mine was silly art.

The winner earned all those votes!

9. Not silly at all.
Your picture has an air of mystery to it. A sense of waiting.

11. Nothing silly about it at all.
It tells its stories and leaves the viewer guessing too. It's ominous and inviting at once.

15. Thats the two sides of Photography
Documentation and Art. As much as Tindalos picture reminds us (powerfully) that there are things still to be rectified, I would not like to live in a world without "silly art".
This competition, more than many there have been here, really showed of the width of the spectrum we call "Photography".

26. Once again I've been schooled
It was a dumb comment. I should never post late at night. But it came from my reaction to a person who posted during the finals thread saying they had a tough time choosing beteen mine and the obvious winner. There I sat thinking that all I did was go out on a foggy night with a tripod - set the timer, walked into the pic and stood still for 30 seconds.

I wanted to scream - CHOOSE THAT ONE. ITS REAL!

28. I can understand that.
I felt I had cheated quite a bit on mine, in my postprocessing. "This was not what I saw. Is this real, now? Is this street?".
But it was a better _picture_ than the original, by far.

8. It was pure luck.
As much as I'd like to take credit, I just happened to be there.

10. It's intrinsic to photography that sometimes
all you have to do it be there and know how to use your camera. In fact, that's simply a very large part of what good photography is really about.

12. That's very true.
You know, I almost didn't take that picture? I didn't want to disturb them.

13. That's totally understandable.
As hard as it is to look at it, it must have been much harder to take.

21. The most important thing of all is to have it tucked away in your pocket
and with you always. I swear I don't leave my house without my little camera any more than without my wallet.

24. You do deserve credit
The art is in being there in that moment and recognizing the opportunity.

Art is in everyday life, constantly unfolding around us. It takes an artist to capture it.

16. The Host's choices are also my two favorites.
The serendipity of capturing those two images; the flash and the intimacy. Just wonderful! Tindalos's image is also lovely and moving, although when I see a homeless person with a dog (and there are a number of them in NYC), I always feel particularly sorry for the dog, who didn't do anything to create the mess he's in.
The Bus Stop reminds me of the '78 storms in Boston, when each trolley would have to stop three times at each stop (one for each car), because there was only one spot to get off that had been carved out in the snow.

20. Congratulations Everyone!
Great pics!

I was really surprised by the audience choices this time. I thought Night moves would win first place when I saw it.

The hold me pic is a very tender pic and that snowed in bus stop has a great feel to it too. I think that pretty much describes this contest and how the votes were divided - it was based on feeling.

22. Big heartfelt congratulations to all the winners, and also to those
who "showed up". In life, showing up is what separates the losers from the winners, because just by showing up all these things can turn on a dime.
I have only been involved in three contests, have found them all fascinating. Am trying to learn from everyone as fast as I can.

This time, the overwhelming sentiment was emotion. On all levels. And it won in the phenomenal shot Tindalos took.
I looked up when I first saw it submitted, turned to the person beside me, and said: "Wanna see the winner?"

Almost every one though is my favorite!
I had a thoroughly good time seeing this one develop.
Thanks to RegnaD and all the people who entered the contest.

Onward and upward !
