Mamiya intros 33MP medium format camera
Digital studio-grade photo camera maker Mamiya on Tuesday announced the upcoming release of its DL33 medium format camera. Reflecting its namesake and role, it has a 33-megapixel sensor sized at 36x48mm, or about twice the size of conventional full-frame DSLR cameras, with each pixel sized at 7.2 microns. The camera also has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, which Mamiya claims is the largest in the industry, and offers a high contrast for outdoor shooting.

It's only $20,000

2. Eh, now that I have discovered Autostitch I don't really lust over such a thing quite so much..
I just posted an image shot with 15 each 7 megapixel images, that's 100 megapixels give or take a peck or two..

I already have a Leica lens and with HDR and Autostitch I can can emulate a camera like the Mamiya for about one percent of its price..

Besides, with any interchangeable lens camera you should have considerably more in the lenses than the body, I don't even want to know what lenses for such a beast would cost.. :o

3. I was drooling until I saw the price.
Still, though, quality medium format in the digital genre hopefully will come down in price over time. Wow!

Does a smaller lens shoot out of the regular lens?

7. Eh...not a huge increase...
...over the 25 MP back they've had for years. (Check out any of the recent Tim Fitzharris books for examples from that "old" camera.)

That one cost in the $20-30K range as well.

8. I'm trying, somewhat unsuccessfully to save up for an entry level Canon DSL
body. Sooner or later I will find a deal. Until then I will have to live with my 5mp Canon S-50.

17. On the bright side
DSLRs have never been less expensive. A good used Rebel XT (350D) can be had for around $300 +/- with a kit lens and some accessories on the camera forums. I just bought a good used 40D for my step son. It came with a grip ($150 used), 3 batteries, 2 CF cards, a case, orig box and all cables, manuals, and software for $800 shipped. When I bought my Rebel XT and grip a few years ago it cost $1000 new.

rangefinder forums with classified pages.

Personally I liken most of these cameras to Mercedes or Rolex, beautiful outside, nice status symbols, fun to play with but mediocre results.

Edit..For Canon I have bought on the Canon Forum and Fred Miranda (you have to sign up to see the sell forum on Canon)

shifting to used 40Ds and 5Ds right now and selling their Rebel series cameras. I have bought 3 used cameras off of the forums and have had great luck with them. My sons Rebel XT has been a great camera, the 40D he just got is also very nice and I recently bought a 5D which is in great shape. Most of the sellers on the forums know how to care for their DSLR, some people who sell on Craigs List and other places may not, especially on entry level DSLRs. I would offer you my XT but I think I am going to have it converted to IR. Good luck!

Edit..BTW the XTi or XSi are very nice. The XSi uses SD cards which are a bit cheaper and easier to find than CF cards.

given the choice between a new XSi and a good used 40D, I would spend the extra $50+/- for the used 40D. More durable body, more ergonomic, better high ISO performance and larger ISO range, faster frame rate and faster auto focus. Don't get sucked in by the 2MP larger sensor of the XSi, a 10 MP sensor will leave plenty of crop space still leaving enough resolution for quality larger prints. Again both are great cameras, I would recommend going to Best Buy and handling both to get a feel for the 2. If BB no longer has the 40D, the 50D is a very close match.
