The first DU Photo contest seemed to be sucessful...
And I'd once again like to congratulate RagingInMiami for being the winner.

Now the question is, should we have another one, maybe on the last weekend of every month, just to give everybody a heads up first.

Should we have a theme for the contest?

Discuss any ideas here. I'll be checking in from time to time.

1. Congrats RaginInMiami!
That was a fantastic picture you took!

As for the contest - maybe have a theme and post the schedule ahead of time. That way if you can only enter a set number you can know in advance.

And thanks Longgrain for arranging the contest - great job! I didn't even know this board existed and now I'm stealing lots of great ideas :):toast:

3. I think a theme would be a good idea
It puts a spotlight on different skills and ideas if you have different themes each month.

4. Thanks for arranging this Longgrain....
Congrats to RagingInMiami for a great winning pic.

It would be great to try to do this once a month.....any ideas how we can increase the max number of entries, or work out a way to stop the same people (e.g. me) entering each month?

P.

5. And thank you for entering Perk

I'm guessing each time we try it, the previous ten participants would be ineligible, that way each time we we get a fresh batch of entries.

We're limited to ten entries because there are only ten slots for questions when you post a poll, plus I'm guessing more than ten might be too many. Most people seemed to have a hard enough time choosing only one.

6. For the next photo contest, I suggest that you make it
anonymous. That is, don't post the username together with the picture, but post the picture title only. This will ensure that the voting is fair, without name recognition. After the contest, then you can reveal the username of the winner.

Also, I suggest that you compile links of the photo contest threads for easy reference. As of now, there is only one contest thread, but if you hold more contests, there will be more.

Good job. :)

7. That's a pretty good idea...
It would keep it from becoming a popularity contest. Some DUers get around more than others...

Thanks:thumbsup:

9. I think the theme idea is a good one
sometimes photographers need some incentive to go out and shoot. Also , I think the idea that that photos be anonymous is also a good idea.

10. Well I don't suggest night shots, since Sean Reynolds will blow us away
...but, in the spirit of the season, and since half of the country is covered with it, how about some snow shots, or to be more generic, winterscapes? I'm sure even Miami changes in the winter a little, so our friend there can conjure up something.

11. I'm also suggesting that the ten people who
were in the first contest, not be eligible...just to get a fresh mixture...

You of course could enter since you weren't really in the first contest...

I'll contiue orginizing them, for as long as I can, I'm thinking maybe monthy, the last weekend of each month with the sign up sheet availbe the week before?

12. I'll second the other comments
A theme is a good idea as well as the no back-to-back entry and the anonymous entry ideas.

Also here's an idea for a non-contest. At another board I frequent they post weekly photo challenges. Say I come up with a theme then everyone interested posts their photos relating to the theme. Usually no limit to number of photos but I think 3 is plenty, makes easier on the dial-up folks. At the end of the week the person that chose the theme this time around gets to pick the person to choose the next weeks theme.

We're kinda doing something here like that now with the various themed posts this just adds some structure to it.

13. It's good to get back into the country
and find out you won the first DU photo contest. Thanks for all the congratulations.
I spent the holidays with my family down in Colombia, but it's good to be back home in Miami.
I'm looking forward to the next contest and I agree that it should be anonymous and also have a theme.

15. Just throwing out a thought
When you have a theme title for the contests maybe be less specific. In other words, have it as People, Nature, Indoors, etc. until there are enough contests to then get more specific. Hope that makes sense.

16. Yes, this is also a way to accomodate many entries without having to
Edited on Tue Jan-04-05 07:46 PM by Be Brave
ban entrants to a previous contest. If there is a contest per category, e.g. Nature, People, Photojournalism, etc., and there is a winner per category, then one can accomodate more entries without having to ban previous contestants. The contests for the different categories can be held at the same time (different threads).

17. Another suggestion that came to me after some thought.
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 01:06 AM by Be Brave
I suggest that you consider making the posted images for the contest a litte larger. Not too large as to eat up bandwidth, but larger than the size used for the recent DU photo contest. Maybe 25% bigger? The reason is, with the image size that was used for the recent contest, landscapes or wide-angle shots are really put at a disadvantage. So, just so everything is at an equal footing, make the images a little larger.

18. I can consider that...
The only reason they were so small in the first contest is because on of the entrees had some image hosting trouble, and could only summit a rather small image...To be fair I downsized the others so they were all approximately the same size...

or something?

Well, just a suggestion. Think about it.
