I haven't had much time yet to get out there and take some pics! Is this the real submission thread or just some practice shots type thread?

20. Take your time everyone, there is no rush!
I'm just winging it here.
How about we make the submission deadline the 21st? I say submit as many photos as you want until then. On or before the 21st, you must select one shot to represent you in the contest. Then we deliberate for five days and vote on the best photo. The top five vote getters will then be presented for consideration and we will vote again on the 31st for the Extremely Super Good Grand Prize Winning Photo.

However, I am new at this so if there is a better way to do it, please speak up!

If you are really opening entries right now, here's mine, but only because I have to pick something quick. I'd like a bit longer to take new photos and/or review some of my older ones.

and in the woods helped lots. I am also all digital so could take lots of shots at different shutter speeds and different angles. There were a lot of pics taken that day that were deleted. This site is pretty helpful and interesting for waterfall info http://www.garryblack.com/waterfalls.htm Thank you for the compliment.

120. Wouldn't you like to know. I wanted to show three
qualities of water. life giving, transparent, reflective.

The highest good is like water.
Water gives life to the ten thousand things and does not strive.
It flows in places men reject and so is like the Tao.
In dwelling, be close to the land.
In meditation, go deep in the heart.
In dealing with others, be gentle and kind.
In speech, be true.
In ruling, be just.
In business, be competent.
In action, watch the timing.
No fight:
No blame.

13. Yes.
Somewhere in or near Ward, CO. It's in a national park or wilderness area, and you can actually drive to this location and almost take this shot from the car window. It was very cold waiting for the sunrise and full moon to get the shot even though it was taken in August. But worth it for the photos I got.

Water is a tough subject, though, don't you think? Much harder than flowers.

14. Yeah, I've got a zillion pictures of water
(hard to avoid here), but none of them are really eye-poppers. I'm stymied. Your picture, mountains and lily pads, reminds me of one of my favorite spots here in Alaska. The only bad thing about my spot though is that there's not really any place to pull off the highway there except on the shoulder which isn't really conducive to setting up for good photos.

I don't know what I'm going to do about this contest. WHERE'S ALGOMAS??

101. Wonderfully so, IMHO...
Don't get me wrong -- it wouldn't be something I'd want to fall into. But the day was hot and humid, and the spray at Deception Falls (see my photo, taken about a quarter-mile upstream) was a blessed relief for those, like myself, who are not great fans of heat.

BTW, the river isn't coming out of a cave. It's coming down a small waterfall off the lower right of the image (parallel to the little jet in the center, hitting a rock face, making a 90-degree turn and heading off into a deep channel in the rocks to the top of the image.

Have another version of "Ice Cubes" that I'm lookin' at and a couple of other versions of "Drive By" and I still haven't taken the snapshots I was planning.

Ms F came up with this idea. Went out last night and took a fast shot in total darkness. Liked the way the water drops are suspended in air. Think I need a better background.....

I'll probably sit out this contest to make it a little easier on Algomas. I'm just enjoying playing around with different water ideas.

The strange white angle in the lower left corner is the edge of the reflecting pool. I liked the sheer weirdness of it.

I think I've stood on the exact same spot as the figure in that photo. (I also remember going over that bridge in a less-than-stable converted mail truck during a high wind. The rising curve on the western side, without much in the way of side guard rails, was quite...entertaining, shall we say.)

Nice photo, BTW!

110. Thanks, I like your photos too
Specifically Shower Curtain and Skewed Gothic.

My photo was taken on the golf course behind the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, a municipilatity of Miami-Dade County. The hotel was built in 1926 and is considered a historical landmark. It was modeled after the Giralda Tower in Spain.

My goal was to capture the hotel in the background with the bridge and water in the foreground. I was hoping to capture the setting sun behind the building and its effects on the clouds, but the building is not aligned with the sun and bridge so I had to settle for this photo.

This is the Giralda Tower, which is in Seville.

CHURCH-giralda_tower.jpg (JPEG Image, 406x551 pixels) - Scaled (99%)

And here is a link about the Biltmore Hotel. If you ever come to Miami, mabe you can stay there for a few days. It's only about $500 a night.

123. Yep. It's a Hawaiian Trigger Fish (the state fish)
Edited on Sat Jul-16-05 07:02 PM by TahitiNut
This one's called a Picasso Triggerfish. Trigger fish are fascinating. They have two dorsal spines that they can pop erect -- they're very sharp and can pierce a diver's hand. The spines make it tough for a predator to chomp down. The trigger fish also have very powerful jaws that are used to crush the shell of invertibrates - their food. So, they can bite! Like almost all sealife, they're more interested in getting away, though. They have the ability to expel water - it's how they get rid of the debris from crushed shells. Thus, they can also use the jet-effect to propel themselves backwards. This backwards propulsion (assisted with fins) also puts them into their favorite defensive locations: holes and small caves, just big enough for them to face out.

Fish like this are one of the many, many joys of scuba diving.

Here's a reference shot of the Picasso Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus) ...

116. This is Al Gomas and I just got back from LA...
First off, thanks for the awesome photos people, they make me want to purge my snorkel!

We took the squids (daughters 12 and 10) to see King Tut at the LA County Museum of Art. It was great but what I really loved was the Andre Kertesz exhibition. If you are not familiar with him, he photographed Budapest and Paris between the Wars. The depth of his images are skillfully and poetically achieved by an interaction of form and light. To my eye, his photos convey motion and are full of life. He also has a playful touch illustrated by this quote: "I am an amateur and I intend to be that way for the rest of my life."
We also went for a bike ride along the coast from Redondo to Venice Beach and saw many interesting sights. We saw a hang glider pilot performing tricks at the edge of a cliff, we saw the jets from LAX bursting out of the fog bank as they took off, we saw an amusing collection of freaks of all sexes struttin' there stuff and we saw a fabulous sunset.
Unfortunately, I did something stoopid with my camera battery and got almost zero shots. I was so bummed out but it turned out to be a wonderful day anyway!

We were down there in May -- my daughter lives in Santa Monica, so we were hitting the beach a lot between the Venice Beach pier and the Santa Monica pier. Did you see Dr. John, by any chance? A white-haired hippie wearing a marijuana shirt? He's definitely a memorable character.

He was on a bicycle carrying a huge cross, asking people to sign it. When I declined to sign, he became combative and told me America is a Xtian Nation and that there are more of him than there are us. He is on his way across Amerika, spreading the gospel of Jesus. He also said he was a former Navy Seal. I call him the Repentant Assassin and I sure wish I had a photo of him, dammit!

Edited on Fri Jul-15-05 03:36 PM by Blue_In_AK
...which he was kind enough to let me take. It sounds like our encounter with Dr. John, self-styled "homeless activist" was a lot more pleasant than yours with the Repentant Assassin.

Here's a side view of Dr. J ... maybe you saw him. My other shot is better, but I don't want to post it to protect his identity. This is a little more oblique.

P.S. In my straight-on picture of Dr. John, his "Impeach Bush" T-shirt is clearly visible. I really liked this guy.

Nascar Fan, eh? (from your site) My father was an old dirt track stock car driver. He taught me how to....err..drive. ;) I don't follow racing much these days. Have been more of an open-wheel fan. Biggest thrill I had was when I got a Hot Pit Pass to an IRL race at PPIR. Got to stand out with the cars in the "start your engine" thing. Even if you hate racing standing in the middle of that much horsepower firing to life all at once will send a chill up your spine.
