Vancouver 2010 - Day 1 - HappyCynic version Part III: Drums (Dial-up warning)
Here's part III: Drums. In the middle of the street, not too far from the sculptures, was a small area where there were some events to celebrate Chinese New Year. Today's (well, Saturday's) events were some drum performances. I missed most of the first group, which was a Japanese group performing on Taiko drums. The second group, which will also be performing Sunday, is a Taiwanese group (Taiwanese Ten Drum Art Percussion Group).

Here are a couple shots from the Taiko drummers.

And the Taiwanese group. One thing that's more apparent in the Taiwanese drum group shot are the stances of the performers. You'll notice that they use martial arts stances. This is quite common in many of the Asian performances. You'll also see it in the Lion Dance at Chinese New Year festivals. In fact, for the Lion Dance, it's often the case that all the members are from the same martial arts group. In the following photos, I hope you'll excuse the lighting. (Although I think it works out well in the second last shot.)

1. Nice series
I really love the one where their drumsticks are all sticking out diagonally. That's great. Still, it is hard to pick just one. Jumping up at the bottom looks pretty great too.

3. All 3 parts are great, HC, but these for me are the highlight.
Wonderful sense of motion in these, and you can almost hear the drums as you look at them. Great shots!
