Day Two of Alaska adventure - dial-up warning
Sunrise on Lake Louise

Copper River at Chitina - home of world-famous Copper River salmon

From Chitina we drove the 60 miles of bad road back to McCarthy, site of the Kennecott copper mine which operated until 1938. The road follows the old train track which formerly ran from Cordova back to the mine. The ties can be seen in the road grade in many places, and pieces of the old track are laying by the side of the road. Travelers are warned to watch for spikes.

The road ends at this river, and then you take a footbridge and about a half-mile walk to the town of McCarthy where probably 50 people live now. There is a car bridge a little ways down the river but only locals are allowed to use it. Water comes from the local clear-water streams (not this glacier water) and electricity comes from generators.

Here is some aging railroad track and the original McCarthy general store where it appears that people are now living.

This is a view from the other side of the footbridge. The copper mine can be seen in the lower left-hand corner.

I liked the light on this one...

And we were even blessed with a rainbow. I took this shot from our campsite.

3. There is some beautiful country around Seattle
We're always amazed at how much Washington is like Alaska, the mountains especially.
