1. OKAY --we are on the way.
This is hard work, but I think I have two correct threads going now, I had to redo both because the cross links were no longer operative.
Anyway, thanks to Hippywife's vigilance things may now be on the right paths.
Thank you, again.

While I am thanking for assistance, I want to again mention that Sandnsea gathered the final wording of the rules for us, and I'm grateful for that help.
Now may be a time for us to read them, adopt them, or amend them.

I don't mind hosting this contest and I hope my mistakes are behind me, thanks in advance for sending me a big smile and patience if they are not.
This stuff may seem easy, but it's not to me.
(I do mind that I can't enter a photo, that part is way simpler)

photo and example of the theme.
Where? pray tell - is the mission?

6. Mine is a fence
as you can tell! :) What makes it interesting is it's in the middle of suburbia all of a sudden BAM, there's a pasture with this long white fence. It was a sunny day and I took some shots. Here's the best one that fits the theme.
I find these contests, which I think is the wrong word, a lot of fun!

7. Great fence shot - we're off now for sure.
I also think the contests are tremendous fun, and they are obvious and subtle teaching tools to me all the time.
I can't wait to see more submissions on this theme. When it first came up in a thread on the photo forum I thought I have no such photos, now, since then, I see the possibilities everywhere.

Oh, and what word do you think we should use, if "contest" is a misnomer?

8. Maybe "challenge" ?

Never thought about calling it something else until seeing Dyedinthewoolliberal comment. Challenge came to me but sure there are better words for it.

I like the rules as posted for this contest though might change "...10 pixel black frame to define white backgrounds." to "...10 pixel black frame to define white or very light backgrounds." Sometimes a very light background needs something to contain it and keep it from getting lost on the sea of white.

Will try to get or find an entry. Also taking suggestions and ideas for getting dead mouse stink out of a car.

22. I may try it next.
Did the Google, nothing has helped so far. You wouldn't believe how common this problem is according to the Google and car advice pages. . Watch out for brake lines in Minis and all fluid lines certain models of Hondas. Seems mice love to chew them and drink the fluids. It is soaked with odor mute right now. Waiting for that to dry. The dead mouse has been found and removed. Oh the country life and its odors and I obviously do not drive enough since it stunk up the whole car before I used it.

Sorry to go so off topic and did not take photo of said mouse.

15. Yikes about the mouse stink. I'd google it, really!
I will note your comment about the rules, and maybe others to come, and pass them on to the next host. Or, depending on what develops, put them up for a vote or other discussion.

I look forward to your entry.
Dead mice all in a row could be quite interesting and novel.

11. Not sure what word I mean
because I don't really have an emotional investment in the outcome. While I do like competition in many cases, here I don't feel that way and that is what a contest is, isn't it? To win?
Challenge is similar to contest except the challenge can be as each entrant sees it.
Really, to me, it's just kind of an 'exhibition' that other DU'ers view and get to pick their favorite. Contest might scare off those who feel they aren't good enough to play, and I don't want anyone thinking that..............

12. I feel the same way
It is a challenge to come up with your personal best photo to fit the theme, though. But contest, challenge, exhibition, it doesn't make any difference what we call it. I do love the idea of GD voting, though. It gets people into it, and more invested in trying to evaluate the photos. Lots of times they say they hate making a choice. I "get" that.

I think of it more as a juried exhibition, and GD is the jury.

But I don't feel all that competitive about it, except not wanting to stand out in a bad way, LOL.

I think the only difference between a challenge and a contest is the voting. Either way, the contests/challenges are always fun.

I fully expect a contribution from everybody.

29. I am so excited about the quality of the photos.
Every time I come back new great stuff is showing up.
These are so diverse, good, and fun, and unexpected subject matters..............

I find that the final choices are the ones I like best so far compared to the "second choices" in the other thread,
but I agonize with you making the decisions.

Each one, just about, is my favorite in its own way.
I think that's a great state of affairs for now.

30. For those interested - my entry "Headhouse Noon"
was shot with a Canon Rebel in CRW using a Lens Baby - The only post shot processing was a white balance adjustment and a crop. No gaussian blur was applied.

31. RAW is the way to go if you have a big enough card.
Some cameras don't have the best JPEG quality, and RAW is your only choice for high quality images. My images are shot with a Canon G10 in Raw. It appears, the better the camera, the less post processing needed. When I moved up from the S 50 to the G10 the difference of the out of camera images was astounding. The Lumix GF1 is my object of desire, but reality is in my checking account.

The camera doesn't make you a better photographer, it just makes it easier to get results that you hoped for. Nothing is more depressing than not getting the results you saw in the field.

Though as you say, the better the camera less post work is needed.

My Fuji E900 shoots in RAW but it takes forever to move to the next shot.

34. Visual Alliteration out my back door today

I'm finally building the deck I have always wanted, and there was a little ground breaking going on.
It lent itself to include the two chairs I bought yesterday for 19.97 ea.

There are 6 separate repeats going on. I only did the chairs.

And it was a squeaker to the end.

As I sign out for tonight, I thank you all for your submissions, and for picking this topic which will surely provide for hot threads in the voting.
