My brother lives in Homer, which is about 225 miles south of here on Kachemak Bay, and he has a boat. :) Right now, the sockeye salmon are returning to China Poot Creek across the bay, and there are thousands of them, which, as residents, we're allowed to scoop right out of the river with a net, six a day per licensed fisherperson.
So here are a few shots from our adventure.
High tide was at 5:00 a.m., so here we are at the Homer harbor at 4:00. We had planned to get up at 3:30, but my husband woke up an hour earlier, read his watch wrong and woke me up, so we were rather bleary-eyed at this point
Here is my husband with his net at the rapids where the fish congregate.
I didn't feel steady enough with my weak knee and my expensive camera to go so far up since the rocks were jagged and slippery, so I stayed downstream a bit and took some shots. This is looking back toward the mouth of the creek.
My brother's boat tied up at the mouth.
And the haul, only an hour or so later -- 30 nice bright red salmon. We took home 21 and my brother kept 9 since they can run over there any time they want. My brother fileted them out, and my sister-in-law and I vacuum-sealed them when we got back to their house, so when we got home this afternoon, all I had to do was stick them in the freezer. These are going to taste SO GOOD this winter.
This is a big cooler, by the way. The fish were each about 20-22 inches long.
I took quite a few pictures, so I'll probably be posting several at my website as soon as I have a chance to sort them out. It was absolutely beautiful down there. I'll let you all know when I get them up, so if you want to check them out you can.
