OMG. Damn. WOW. I have no eloquent responses at this point, because it is late, and I found a new hero. I am completely amazed, riveted, engaged and grateful that you posted this.

5. I have mixed feelings about this |
|
A "real estate agent" who knows absolutely nothing about photography makes a proxy bid on some old photos in a storage locker. Vivian was still alive when he bought this, and it took an "expert" months to track her down. After it is confirmed that she died Mr. Ethics comes out of the gutter. Now - surprise surprise - he's a street photographer.
He's scanning the negatives without any knowledge of her printing style. Why has he refused help from some very reputable galleries? Why is he pimping the corpse of Vivian so he can produce a "documentary".
I'm thrilled that her work was found. It's just too bad that a Beanie Baby Collector is now a Mayan Artifact Expert. (satire)
Just my opinion. Lots of questions. Motive of this dude. But thanks for posting it. It'll be interesting to see if this guy makes an effort to work with a gallery so the public can see her work as it should be seen.

6. I'm not smart enough to follow your road of questioning authenticity and |

the handling of the wealth at hand. Actually, what I care about it that it hits the main stream in the best possible way, so the most people see the photos. Anything else is gravy that's not of interest to me.

7. I can't question authenticity |

Nor can the "real estate agent" that bought this collection. I could if certain bits of information was made available to me.
I take if from your response that you are from the same school as the "real estate agent". That Vivian Maier is no longer a person - a photographer. Now that she's dead she is a commodity. If you want the "real estate agent" will send you a roll of undeveloped film if you donate money to him for his "documentary". That really isn't how I'd "hit(s) the main stream in the best possible way, so the most people see the photos.", but that's just me.
I believe that anyone reading this that has seen the work of photographers in Galleries or Museums will back be up when I say that there is no comparison to a lo-res image on the web and the actual print. None. Mr. "Real Estate Agent" wants to flickr-ize her work.
In my opinion he is "hitting the main stream" in the worst possible way. If he makes lots of money, good for him. Maybe he can get on the teevee show Storage Wars.
