KOEB 7/20/05

"Hi, everybody. This is John Dean. Sorry to have to deliver the bad news, but well, looks as if Keith has decided at the last minute to skip out on us for another vacation day. But not to worry, fans! I will be filling in tonight as host of Countdown! Hey, I'm on so much, why not?

"Tonight we're going to spend a little time on the Roberts nomination reactions, sure. But after that, we're back down to the meat...and I mean tasty, delicious KARL ROVE prime cut of beef! You're going to hear all about how *I* feel about a guy who blows the cover of a CIA operative, and whether or not he belongs anywhere near the White House! Why..."

"Uh...John, HELLO?!?"

"Oh...uh, hi, Keith!"

"John, it appears we had a bit of a miscommunication here. I AM going to host the show tonight...And no, the game was NOT rained out...Very funny." :-(

 "Sorry, Keith. I'll be a good little guest."

"OK then." (to us) "Please join me tonight for Countdown. We ARE going to have John Dean. And he IS going to talk about Karl Rove. Let's just not forget who is the host of this show, shall we?" *sigh*

1. HILARIOUS!!
Oh, this is the best yet. I needed a laugh. As I was leaving home for work today, the police stopped me as I was driving out. To make a long story short, there was a murder in my apartment building, one floor below where I am. I knew the neighborhood wasn't great (the building was okay, it's the neighbors in the cul-de-sac in the back), but this was still not a great way to start the morning.

Needless to say...I won't be renewing my lease come October.

106. I used to live in a really bad neighborhood in Upper Manhattan about a
dozen years ago. There were so many murders I lost count. It was urban jungle living at it's worst. So sorry, I remember just how fearful we were living there. But then I moved to the safe, leafy little burbs in NJ, and there was a shooting at our post office in the first month we lived here. Too many guns, not enough love, peace, and understanding, and therapy. Good idea to leave in October. ARe the police coming around asking all the neighbors questions about what they heard or saw?

118. A question for you, Bunny!
What area of Manhattan was that in? I have some friends that live on the Upper East Side (near Gracie Mansion), and wondered how safe it was there.

The police were talking to several folks in my building. The whole thing is just starting to hit, and it's really scary. This sounds dramatic, but you know what? God literally saved my life this morning. I almost went to the gym at the exact same time this lunatic was roaming my building.

I've always had faith (not like the political psychos, mind you), and this just reinforced it.

Every suburban kid with bank would show up to buy their drugs. The apartments were great, with River views but oy vey, the neighborhood.

140. It's the upper, upper West Side, above Harlem. Starts at around
157th Street and encompasses a large area, goes right up to the GW Bridge. There is a very good part of the neighborhood on Upper Cabrini, and Pinehurst above 181st St., goes all the way up to Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters. The bad area is east of Fort Washington Ave. and South. It may have changed a lot there too in the past 12 years. That area has Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center there so the emergency room is conveniently located if the crime is still happening.

Not a day goes by but some idiot kills himself trying to steal ammonia or blows himself up manufacturing the crap. Children are removed from homes everyday because their friggin parents allow them to toddle around while they cook meth in the house. One idiot was breaking into people's houses while they were away and using their kitchens to cook the stuff! Imagine coming back from vacation and discovering your house is now a toxic waste dump!

Manhattan is really gentrified now, I used to call it 'creeping quiche' when a neighborhood lost some of its character and became uber hip and expensive. Now even the lower East side is pretty safe. Most of the still unsafe neighborhoods are in the outer boroughs. Midtown at night, which is usually the garment district during the day and is relatively unpopulated at night is not so great. The areas around Penn Station and Port Authority are still pretty scuzzy at night and even during the day, that's West side , 8th Ave, 9th Ave, between say 26th and 5Oth Street. Any neighborhoods that have alot of businesses open during the day but are not so populated at night are not the best to walk around in unless you've got a few peeps with you. They are fine during the day.

Nightime neighborhoods with lots of people at all hours are the West Village, EAst Village, on 1st, and 2nd Avenues in the EV, stay on the avenues and not side streets so much there (EV), although some streets are better than others. It's really a much safer city than when I lived there, it's lost a lot of its' edgy charm IMHO though. Upper EAst Side is safe, yet boring. Tribeca has great restaurants. Upper West Side, is now more like the suburbs. There's a fun area near Columbia University around 100th St. and Broadway that's a great area too. LOwer EAst Side is now the new 'creeping Quiche' area. Soho is expensive and overrated. Chelsea is where all the galleris are, and is a great neighborhood, that's the twenties on the west side, 7th Ave, 6th Ave. Also 14th St. has changed, has chi-chi stores like Jeffrey all the way west on 14th (great to look at prices for a laugh), lots of restaurants on 14th too. Hope this helps. Best restaurant on the Upper West Side near where you are staying is Cafe Des Artistes, W. 67th if I remember correctly. My favorite restaurant in the whole city, at least it used to be is Alison on Dominick (on Dominick St.).

OK, I'll stop now. When are you coming?

150. What are the rents like these days? And other questions...
I had a friend who lived on East 86th, near Lexington. We visited them on a Sunday night, left around 11:00 p.m., and felt totally safe.

When I was looking to move to NYC about ten years ago, I really liked Forest Hills and Flushing Meadows. (Forest Hills especially was terrific...great neighborhood, subway access, and the view from my friend's studio apartment was amazing.) Any other areas you recommend as being safe, but affordable? (STOP LAUGHING!!! Remember...Seattle was just voted the most overpriced city to live in, and heck...I had a murder in my building this morning!)

One other geography question (didn't know this was a quiz, did ya?) How far out is Secaucus from NYC, and can you get there by subway? (Heck...a girl can dream, right?)

152. I am sorry to say but there is nothing affordable in all of Manhattan as
far as I can tell. Greenpoint in Brooklyn is getting trendy, there might be some affordable rents there. Astoria, in Queens is a traditionally Greek neighborhood, very safe, and great food, not sure what the rents are. Best least inflated rents are probably in Queens, Sunnyside, etc. Brooklyn has gotten ridiculous, practically everywhere. How do you feel about roommates, lots of roommates, I hear that's what people have to do these days. I live in a great town in NJ, only 12 miles from Manhattan with a direct train to Penn Station, rents are getting high out here too. Hoboken is really close to Manhattan but rents are high there too as well as in Jersey City. Secaucus is minutes away from NYC in Joisey, there is no subway going there that I know of, although the train from my town does stop there so you can get there from NYC going the other way on the train. You would not want to live in Secaucus, but all the outlet stores are there so it's great for shopping (and stalking KO, just kidding).

163. Thanks SOOOOOO much for the info!
I really appreciate the update. Back in 1992, when I was seriously considering moving to NYC, there was an actual relocation assistance office in the World Trade Center. When the towers fell, it really got to me, because I remembered being in the lobby and the offices. Words can't express the grief, ya know?

Secaucus...outlet malls...hm...I'm there! (No stalking for yours truly, I promise! I'm not that kinda girl, and besides: after dodging a bullet...literally...this morning, I'm not going to do anything to hack off the Almighty. I owe Him too much!)

It looks as if MSNBC as a whole has decided to do away with the local-station affiliate shout-outs separating their shows and move right from one to the next.

If he doesn't show it, all we can conclude is that Dean himself decided the big find was somehow a bust and that doesn't seem likely.

100. My guess is the SCOTUS nominations ate some time, and they knew
that they could give more time to Dean tomorrow. But that's just a guess.

And sources suggest that the transcript of the show John Dean supposedly tried to take over was, in fact, a forgery which may have originated in Italy with people connected to Michael Ledeen before it was found in Africa.

an agnostic (ironically, a trip to Jerusalem turned him. He hated the militant methods involved in a "church," erm, "temple" state.) I told him he was probably Unitarian. LOL!

His mother, however, *IS* Jewish. :)

My ex is Muslim - he didn't eat pork, either. My son had never even eaten pork until he tried a pepperoni pizza at a school party. Luckily, it didn't make him sick (pork is hard to digest if you're not used to it).

Oh! I have a great "religious" joke for you, Rev!

176. It was actually Pat and Tweety together at the same time
having a "More Catholic Than Thou" WWE smackdown, while Keith tried desperately to play referee.

Tweety, who tends to be a progressive as far as Catholicism goes, was saying something about how he'd like a new pope who would face the reality of how many Catholics disagree with the church's teachings on birth control, women priests, etc. And Pat, who is of course Mr. Conservative Catholic, was disagreeing with him on that point. At which point they began to argue at each other and Keith stepped in and said that well, he was raised in the Unitarian church and they learned that one of their goals was to learn a lot about other religions in the hopes of bringing them together. At which point Pat made a "Unitarians burn a question mark on your lawn" joke. (Maybe he got it wrong.)

Really, I doubt he reads us during commercials. Most likely someone else on staff was reading email and noticed that people were emailing in, told him and he fixed it.

My admiration for the man just goes through the roof. I made a mistake today at work and just lost it, I was so upset with someone always finding some mistake I had made after I checked something THREE times to make sure it was right. I was in self-hate mode. Hearing Keith blame himself for this slip did a lot to make me feel better.

177. Of course, this would assume that Keith, like a pirate,
wears his parrot on his shoulder wherever he goes.

ARRRRRHHHHHHH!

Then again, taking it to a Yankees game would be a very bad idea unless he *wanted* it to develop the vocabulary of a drunken sailor.

Saw a story on consumer debt today, and how people need to be paying off their credit cards, since interest rates are/will be rising. It's a serious problem, affecting millions.

and home equity loans, which is okay if you don't use your credit cards and pay off the loan. Many people could lose their homes if they don't practice fiscal responsibility.

she should declare bankrupty now. She can always go back and pay her creditors after declaring bankrupty. They wouldn't object to taking her money. :-)

Things are about to get very, very bad for folks with unsecured debt.

while she still can. really, credit cards are unsecured debts. yes they can sue you & get a judgement, but if you're "judgment-proof" that's about all they can do, at least in texas. we don't have debtor's prisons in the US....yet.

96. this is my new post after the show schtik. I hope someone's still here,
I haven't read down thread yet.

1.KO, just when I had begun to think stripes were boring, you pull out that psychadelic little number and surprise me. You're strobing just a bit but who cares.:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

2. Howie Fineman 'they'll take any diversion they can get.' You got that right Howie. Tells Keith the story is going away for now because there's not that much new to report without Patrick Fitzgerald telling what he's got. That's the attitude that has you boldly going where no journalist has gone before Howie. KO says "It ain't dead yet' about the story. I'm more inclined to agree with Keef of course

3. Roberts gives out his cellphone #, is a mensch and has a bald spot.
Guliani's son is at university INTERCOLLEGIATE GOLF. He must be so proud. Keith asks talking head 'You couldn't want to speculate on his opinion (Roberts not Guliani) on abortion, school prayer, and endangered species." So Roberts is a warm and cuddly human being who just might take away my daughters rights over and privacy concerning their own bodies, but he's a mensch, so no worries.

4. I almost cried when they showed the pic of the Kerry and Edwards families. The pic of what should have been our 1st and 2nd families.

5. Ha, Puppet Theater Network, wrong John Roberts, I posted today on DU about another wrong John Roberts (I got it from Kos, don't yell at me) Boy was my cyberface red!

6. Beam me up Scottie. I'll bet our little Scottie McClellan wishes he could be beamed up temporarily during his next press conference if the press formerly known as poodle continues to make a pinata out of him with all Rove all the time questions. One can hope.
Not the first Star Trek actor to pass on to that great Enterprise in the sky, didn't Doc die a few years ago. KO must not be a trekkie, thank Gawd.
Apparently Solo and Scottie really liked to tie one on together. It's been mentioned a few times now. Scottie really liked sushi and Scotch. Overshare!!!
Segment was way too long. I want the Rove story and not just Turdblossom Theater either.

7. Tattooed pigs, I love it. Oink ink.
8. There's a Weekee WAtchee in South Korea. Will wonders never cease.
The shirts say head, the catch of the day is Scrod. LOL

9.KO does his best Bela Lugosi. It sucked but it was cute anyway because it's KO

10. What does Blivet have to do to make a large overwhelming majority of people realize he's not trustworthy about ANYTHING, EVER. Don't answer that.

It's so obvious that Rove just didn't think he'd get caught. I'll bet he did lie and omit with the FBI. I sure hope KO has John Dean on this week with his theory on what law the Pillsbury Roveboy may have broken and can get nailed on.
Is this the new RW meme, or MSM echo sentence, the coverage will slow down for awhile and then heat up again in October. I'm sorry, I'm sure that's just what the repubes hope will happen. This must be kept at least on simmer, not allowed to cool down at all, keep digging and exposing the story and keep it well within the public eye. The fact that only 50% of the public is paying attention is somewhat encouraging and somewhat depressing, it is a convoluted story (deliberately so) but the % must go up, not down. The only way to do that is to keep it's little legs going. That Vanderhei guy is cute, so young to be a WH correspondent, he looks like a kid off Degrassi.

Miss the last 10 minutes. That's Bunny Planet Countdown Schtik for now. Now I'll read what everybody else wrote.

98. Love your comments as always, Buns.
but look at it this way, if Roberts tries to take our rights away, people will finally realize the very real consequences of having a too-conservative justice...and maybe it's damn time they did.

And I don't think KO was trying to do Bela Lugosi, it was more like Count Floyd.

And like you, I do eagerly await John Dean and am wondering what the hell happened to him tonight. AND what happened to the little-known legal precedent Keith supposedly discovered that is going to nail Rove.

NOW I really have to go...

105. He was'nt imitating Lugosi.
He was imitating Count Floyd from SCTV imitating Lugosi. Count Floyd would introduce these boring movies because he could never get horror films and then try to talk the imaginary kiddies into believing that what they just saw was scary. One of the best parts of a really funny show. (SCTV stands for Second City Television, the late, great John Candy was a member of Second City comedy troupe.)

I loved Andrea Martin's characters best, Edith Prickly and the Word Fairy were my faves. I LOVED John Candy, was so sad when he died. One of my family's favorite movies is 'Trains, Planes, and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy. That beat up, burnt up car they are driving around in, makes me laugh so hard I can't breath everytime I see it. I had forgotten about Count Floyd though, still can't really remember it that well.

anyway) after SCTV went off the air. All the rest kind of transitioned to the movies, Eugene Levy, Candy, Andrea Martin, and Catherine (can't remember her last name, O'Hara) did though.

I also was a big 'Kids in the Hall' junkie for awhile. Another great Canadian comedy group. 'I'm crushing your head', is still a bit we do around the dinner table. I hope you know which bit I'm talking about otherwise it just sounds so strange and is impossible to explain.
