Cynthia McKinney is caught on tape referring to her aide as 'a fool.' The then tried to order what the reporter could and couldn't broadcast. WGCL (CBS 46) Renee Starzyk reports (April 23)

as so many fail to see....it is not the content....but it is those supplying the spotlight, and shining it on singular incidents no matter how trivial, in order to smear a person's character. People are dying, and a country is being turned to rubble, while 'we the people' are concerned with the use of the word 'fool'. How appropos.

50. It wasn't an unreasonable demand.
Assuming she let the station "mic" her for THEIR sound benefit. It's not like she asked the station to help her dispose of a dead body. The mic was put there for a public discussion not as a bug. Sure, shame on her for forgetting about the mic but she wasn't out of line for asking that conversation picked up outside the original intent of the mic not be used.

57. I guess you are not taking in to account the give-and-take aspect.
Politicians divulge information ALL THE TIME "off the record" and reporters agree to accept information "off the record."

How about this: I, as a politician/subject of an interview, let you put a mic ON MY PERSON with the implied understanding if I forget to remove it you don't get to bug me for the rest of the day-night-week. Otherwise, you don't the convenience of having a mic on my neck and good sound quality for your evening broadcast.

I know the deal wasn't negotiated upfront but there has to be some sense of fair-play and an implied "gentleman's agreement."

Other than that, I have no love for politicians and McKinney is no exception so I can see your side too. Eh.

who many times facilitated the huge crimes committed by the Bush cabal. To answer your question 'why does everything go back to Cheney/Bush?

Each time I hear of ANY little minor screw-up by a Dem, it reminds me of the MAJOR crimes of the current administration ~ most of which were ignored by the MSM, thereby leading this country down a disastrous and dangerous road.

So, Cynthia said something not too complimentary about someone (can't check the link, so I'm guessing) and this is important?? Maybe in a different time, when we didn't have to worry about this insane administration starting WW111, but now, all it does is serve as a reminder as to how the Dems failed to speak up, to attack these criminals every chance they got. That was a HUGE mistake, one we won't make again. Cynthia did, she was right as it turns out, so now she is a target.

I will not participate in a witch hunt against one of the few Dems who were smart enough to see this administration for what it was.

Will you jump on the 'smear John Conyers' campaign that has now started, also? In case you want to jump on that bandwagon, it seems Mr. Conyers asked one of his staff members to BABYSIT for his children!! Many years ago! Imagine that!!

In 2006 he'll be a chairman of the Judicial Committee, so now he cannot be ignored any longer. He must be smeared. I expect to see certain DUers here 'considering the evidence' before 'acting like rightwingers' etc. etc. as we stand by and watch another good American attacked and smeared by Rove's slime machine. Well, no, most of us will not do that. Not anymore!

19. Oh, good! Let's play "Attack a Progressive Democrat" !
It isn't enough that the Republicans are encouraging attacks on Progressive Dems at every possible moment. Let's join them! This is what makes the Democratic Party look unified and politically astute.

Let's ask ourselves how/whether putting the limelight on a Progressive Dems 'faults' helps our cause? We ought to DEFEND HER because she is our own -- at least until she does something illegal. (Hell, the Rethugs support theirs well after illegal actions, indictment and on into prison!)

McKinney is abrupt in all the RIGHT ways -- she has asked the impolite questions that desperately need to be asked about 911; Osama bin Laden; and ELECTION FRAUD. When she returned from Sundance Film Festival - where a new film was shown that highlights disenfranchisement of African American voters and includes her - someone 'rolled' her front lawn, not with toilet paper, but with video tape.

Guess what? Someone who is able to be abrupt enough to 'disrespect' authority and ask questions and make statements that are unpleasant truth is also going to show this trait in other, sometimes less admirable ways.

HER EVERY MOVE IS BEING EXAGGERATED AND ATTACKED in order to destroy her credibility -- help them destroy her and you help them destroy OUR ABILITY to speak out against this nightmare of a government.

:grr:

49. You know in the entertainment industry
they say you can tell what kind of person someone is by the way they treat the crew. Same goes for politics. While this isn't news I'm suprised people are jumping up to defend her. I'm not into bashing Dems but I'm also not into being embarassed by the way someone behaves.

51. What did I miss? She called one of her employees a fool.
Is that what you are embarrassed about? Was there some profanity?

BTW, I didn't support her one bit if she did in fact hit that cop but this is such a non-issue I'm starting to re-think my position on the "tinfoiler's" theories.

59. I'm embarassed by all her recent actions
including her abuse of an aide. Sorry, you don't publicly berate an employee, it shows bad taste. She certainly isn't helping anyone with the way she acts. You can disagree with me, this is just my opinion. The fact is though I deal with many famous people and the actions that she is revealing in public speak loudly to who she is in private. I'm sure many people disagree with me. I have the same trouble with the Dixie Chicks. They have been held up here as icons, when in fact they'll be lucky to put together a crew to tour. I don't know a roadie anywhere that is willing to work with them again.

Though it's not inconsistent with her refusal to accept responsiblity for her errors - which include her weasel-worded apology. I too am surprised at the desire to hop aboard the sinking ship Cynthia. She's not the example that will win us back the House.

63. trust me
if Democrats go to the mat for Cynthia and Democrats that would behave like her, PNAC's goals will be much more easily carried about because we'd be winning very few elections. This forum would literally be going bonkers -- and rightfully so -- if it were Tom DeLay caught on tape calling an aide a fool and then demanding the news outlet to not report it.

Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 06:40 PM by digno dave
that was some nasty tone she took when she lectured the media on what was and wasn't permissible to be aired. If Delay pulled that crap, this board would be on fire.

of supporting the democratic party, but wanting a particular democrat politician to not shot herself in the foot when she handles herself in front of the press after unfortunate incidents.

Its like half the people in this thread are stuch in dualistic thinking of the preoperational stage of cognitive development.

71. Give me a break!
It's taken years for Delay to even be tried for breaking the law.

If it's against the law to call someone a fool, we'll all be heading to jail.

Cynthia bashing seems to be a passtime with some DUers. Why? Because her every cross mood and angry word becomes a media event while the criminals destroy this country and the world -- and McKinney, by the way, is one Dem who stands up to them and tries to stop them.

Phhhtttt.

Underground not Freeper Land.

DeLay is the E-N-E-M-Y, he hates our guts, steals our votes, cuts up our neighborhoods so that we can't vote for D E M O C R A T S.

McKinney always watches out for the Poor and Minorities and called Bush OUT on the War in Iraq! She stood up for us at every tough moment!

I repeat, she is N-O-T T-H-E E-N-E-M-Y, Bush is the enemy, NeoCons are the enemy and Freepers are the enemy.

82. The enemies are more than just bush, and McKinney can be one easily
IE - those that see themselves as above us. They are the ones who makes rules for us on one hand, and different rules for themselves on the other.

I don't care what she calls bush out on, if she does similar things she should be called on them as well - and not given a pass on it because we agree with her in a general sense.

Reminds me of when I was a cop - we were held to a higher standard - which is how we must hold her and all our officials.

I love her dearly, but she is not better than you or I on things. She holds bush to a high standard and calls him on it - we should do no less with her.

in such a superb manner. :)

I am in no way happy when the MSM that is inspired by Bush throws some stupid crap out on one of ours so that WE as Democrats can be smeared.

When will we ever learn that they are digging real real deep to focus on this minor tidbit when they could be pounding THE DECIDER.

Smoke and Mirrors , just smoke and mirrors.

I hope that Cynthia stands up in the middle of Congress and tells all the "DEMOCRATS,"that want her to go out on a limb and stand alone, against the WAR etc. to take her cell phone and stuff it!

We deserve to have her hold her vote and hold her Voice because she doesn't need to say or do one more thing in the interest of the Democratic Party!

72. I'm ashamed at CBS46
McKinney should have known the questions that was going to be asked, but I have it on good authority that CBS 46 submitted a list of questions they would ask in advance and there were no questions on that list about the alleged Capitol police incident. This is gotcha journalism pure and simple. I hope McKinney pushes the FCC to yank their license.

78. She's not even a little crazy.
The media ambushed her at what she thought would be a discussion of issues, and she said what anyone might say about an aide who screwed up by letting her get ambushed - she just didn't know the mike was on. The context of what she's saying is TOTALLY different than it would be had she announced to an audience "My aide Coz is a fool".

She may be a loose cannon, but she's not "batshit crazy".

And personally, I wish we had a lot more people like her in the Congress, rather than the "sane" "democrats" who firmly attached their lips to Bush's rectum after 9-11, who voted for his filthy atrocity of a war. Everyone of THEM is batshit crazy and belongs in prison along with Bush for war crimes, in my humble opinion.

86. So?
Okay, she got a little imperious. That makes her "batshit crazy"? What's so crazy about not wanting an off-the-cuff remark made when she thought she was alone to remain private? If anything, she's a bit naive to think that the media would respect her wishes, or that they were required to.

The media have been after her since she first challenged Bush's lies after 9-11 when the rest of the democrats were still cowering in pools of their own urine. They painted her as an anti-semite and a supporter of Hamas. Now they're making her out to be a violent loon.

Cheney fucking shot a man in the FACE during a round of hunting RELEASED birds. Bush has murdered 2400 Americans and 35,000 Iraqis and spent a THREE HUNDRED BILLION dollars JUST on invading a country that never did ANYTHING to us. Joe Lieberman never misses a chance to hug, kiss and praise Bush and his war, and dozens of other "democrats" voted for it.

And McKinney is crazy?

96. I'm not a McKinney fan, but this is much ado about nothing
She dumped on a staffer...big deal. She then went back and took the position that anything she said that was overheard by reporters, but not directed to them was "off the record." Did they have to honor that? No. Was it unreasonable for her to take the position she took? No. Members of congress and other officials have "off the record" conversations with reporters all the time. Usually, the ground rules are understood in advance. Sometimes they're just understood. Trying to close the barn door after the fact as McKinney did is rarely going to work, but I didn't interpret her comments as saying that there was no legal right for the station do report her comment about her staffer.

But the fact is that if it was newsworthy everytime a member of Congress criticized or called a staffer a name, there wouldn't be time on the news for anything else. And anytime a media outlet wants to ignore a request that a comment be kept "off the record" its free to do so, and the source of that comment is free to respond by refusing to talk to that media outlet in the future.

onenote
