Although the clip has been available on at least two other sites since Friday afternoon, I waited to post the clip on DU until there was a break in the Shrub protest coverage out of California.

I just loved her point about which story is more explosive: Duke frat boys and strippers, or 750 tons of TNT simulating a nuclear blast at the Nevada test site on June 2!

Even the conservative was agreeing with her. It's about time someone let the media know that they're out of touch & shallow, & to hear someone say it in so many words was very gratifying.

"That's gossip...I don't even know the color of her skin...my listeners want to talk about (what's going on with this administration)...I educate my listeners (about what's important)."

Along with the fact the conservative guest agreed with her, Randi was able to force Zahn into shifting the topic to immigration. Again, the conservative host & Randi were in agreement. Zahn looked as though her bubble had burst by the end of the segment.

Won't be digging through the archives for that clip anytime soon, but you're right, Randi did make quite a fool out of Parshall and that interview has become something of a Randi cult classic.

34. While Paula was right and the rape issue is a vitally important issue,

this story is being used now as a propagandic distraction to all the other huge priorities at hand.

Randi in my opinion, did well in communicating other problems including the nuclear wasteland Nevada which will not only affect Nevada, it will affect and contaminate California and all surrounding states that are about to receive the contamination. (Another convenient New Orleans?) It could be an assault that could affect all individuals living within and around that vicinity. It could create a cancer epidemic in which no one will be held accountable, and by all means, we need to be addressing this.

However, I wish she had not disregarded and minimalized the violence and expendability of assaults on women, and women as essentially instruments for men to use and abuse.

However, Randi often goes "either -or" instead of "in addition". Rape is not a non-issue, however when millions could be affected by a nuclear contamination, she of course should address the obvious. However, she greatly trivializes sex with men and the act itself as if its all just fun and recreation. Perhaps for her it is, but then she has never been assaulted.

Randi Rhodes has many plus-es in addressing political issues. However her apparent disregard for womens' issues and realities, as well as her treatment of women callers versus men callers, while greatly improved, is nevertheless imbalanced. It seems she has more a need to be "one of the guys" than she does in realizing and being proud she is a female.


The way in which Randi said this is a "non-issue" is NOT true to those females who have been violently assaulted. She minimalized and makes them expendable when she dismisses such realities. What she said about it being a non issue is stupid, ignorant and callous statement, and shows she has obviously not had such an experience.

Randi didn't do women a favor in flippantly disregarding this issue. However I do understand the level of prioritizing issues. She was right, however she could have said, "you know Paula, this is an important issue, however, in the world and present in which we are living, this is not the top story we need to be addressing right now, although it needs addressing". That is what she could have emphasized more, instead of throwing domestic violence against women out with the bath water. Randi seems to have much to learn in that realm. Paula, on the other hand, interestingly enough, got it tonight.

There in lies the difference.

But she was very respectful of the problem of rape. What she said was that it happens everyday and to focus on this one Duke case was gratuitous and gossip and not news. I agree.

NO ONE ever (well, almost never) calls them out publicly... every smart person who takes money to comment on "news" is an enabler to the phony, fluffy crap that continues to make Americans the least-informed people of any industrialized country. Why the hell do I have to watch the BBC world news to find out what's going on in? Even CNN International does a much better job than the US version. They add the "extra-stupid" ingredient here to make the masses dumb and malleable.

The Duke rape story is TOTALLY media-driven because, like a poorly made TV movie of the week, it has all the ingredients of tabloid sensation. In actuality, Randi is right: This crime happens every day. If the ingredients of class and race weren't there, we would never be hearing of this 24/7. On the flip side, we have much more important and crucial events going on that the media are virtually ignoring. When we wake up one day and find a mushroom cloud in the sky -- THEN, will they cover the story????

I don't have an Air America station near me, and I'm sorry for that. I am really impressed (by reading DU accounts) with how Randi Rhodes consistently hits it right on the head.
