Rwanda seems to be very popular these days
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 10:08 PM by linazelle
I saw Hotel Rwanda on cable recently, and, sorry to say, was totally ignorant about what happened there until then. Last night not a month later, a similar movie, Sometimes in April, was shown too. It was very good as well.

In both movies, they show the US, and the latter movie shows Clinton specifically, as we failed to intervene.

This was a HUUUGE failing on our parts. Nearly 1 million died--and we wail about Saddam's mass graves and OBL attack on the WTC killing 3000. It's disgusting that basically, one American life seems to equal thousands of others from other countries--especially black people's lives.

But the real reason that I wrote this was because of the political embarassment that I believe this movie connects to Clinton. There have been other failings. No movies have been funded to show them over and over. IMHO, Rwanda was beyond tragic but the fact that it is being publicized now is purely political.

One more thing. Those people were sitting ducks--much like we are here. They saw the unrest build up around them and ignored it. Then one day everything was shut down and they couldn not escape. It can, and very likely will happen on our soil. Soon.

1. The crazy thing is that UN headquarters wouldn't allow the UN troops to

protect unarmed civilians. It's not as though UN troops would have had to stand in the middle while two groups of armed combatants fired bullets at each other.

In fact, the UN didn't even stop radio stations that were openly inciting violence. It didn't even jam the transmissions -- something that can be done without physically confronting those who control or guard radio stations.

2. Yep. Total neglect. It's not until you see the movie that you understand
the humanity of it all. For most people, even me and my ignorance, it was just a bunch of Africans that we heard about in passing. They're all barbarians anyway right. :sarcasm:

3. A book with no pictures is enough.
When you figure out why you can read some, but then keep avoiding the book even after specifically scheduling time to read it, you will realize that you can't really build up a tolerance for it and that such a tolerance probably wouldn't be good for your psyche anyway.

5. The bright side is that musical lyrics like "We are all innocent"
(meaning all human beings?) give you a chuckle.
