Centcom Set For $180 Million Expansion

U.S. Central Command headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base is slated to receive a major renovation and expansion that will cost taxpayers $180 million by the end of the decade, according to an internal Pentagon budget document.
The plan comes eight months after MacDill was spared in a round of military base closings and portends a lengthy future for Centcom in Tampa.

The command headquarters' staff occupies a 187,000-square-foot facility, but nearly 330,000 square feet is needed to handle the demands of managing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a Centcom spokeswoman said.

The document, known formally as a program budget decision, was approved Dec. 28 by Defense Department Comptroller Tina Jonas.
InsideDefense.com, an online news service in Washington, first reported the document's existence.

n a separate but related move, Centcom is building a new Joint Intelligence Center at MacDill, a state-of-the-art facility that will cost $120 million and allow the command to keep a closer watch on operations stretching from central Asia to the Horn of Africa.

Money for the intelligence center is being supplied through U.S. intelligence community accounts. The work will be overseen by the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington.

Yep, it looks like we're gearing up to bomb Iran. This is getting increasingly ominous. Tragic how *warring infrastructure* takes priority over New Orleans reconstruction.

Give peace a chance.
