"American"Ntl anthem sung in "English" because this is England, not Spain?
It struck me yesterday, the reason we need to sing the national anthem only in English is because this is England, right? Not Spain, right? Oh yes, United States of America. Hmmm, lets then only sing it in American.

Here's a couple websites to start exploring, trying to figure out who to get to translate the anthem into American languages.
WWW Virtual Library - American Indians http://www.hanksville.org/NAresources/indices/NAlanguage.html
Indigenous Peoples' Literature http://www.indians.org/welker/americas.htm

3. My husband who is Spanish
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 02:40 PM by shamrock
came home from work yesterday and asked what my opinion is of the National Anthem being sung in Spanish.
He said that most of the guys where he works are offended by it . I told him that it doesn't really bother me and I didn't understand why it bothered them. He explained it like this: The national anthem of a country is kind of like it's flag, it's the national symbol of our country, and we don't like it being messed with. Even though he's Spanish, he was also offended by it. He said that it's not the language that is the issue, it's what he percieves as disrespect toward a national symbol. I suspect that that's what bothers lots of people but they can't quite put their finger on what it is. Like I said, it doesn't bother me, but I have to admit that I find the timing rather suspicious.

2. I live in New Mexico, and the local Hispanos will tell you they were

here for over 100 years before the first honky wandered in from the east. They are proud of their heritage and most teach their kids Spanish to speak at home AND English to speak in the world. There's a local accent that is charming and Spanish peppers most sentences.

It's high time we recognized that this country is NOT a WASP country, that it was settled by the Spanish, French, Russians and the Dutch, and that people have been arriving in waves of immigration ever since they staked out territories for their various monarchs.

It's a shame so many people are so horribly intimidated by languages other than their own.

4. We should be nice to the Spanish people not just because it's right...

but also because when Spanish people have the majority, the Repukes won't want President Jarrett Barrios declaring Spanish the official language and banning English in public schools.

They can think of it in terms as "Do unto others," or they can think of it in terms of "Payback's a bitch."

Tell the Repukes not to piss-off our future majority voters too much. They'll remember what we do to them today.

5. Translate into anything you like.
Go into here, enter the language you want, type in the words and hey presto.

Here's the first two lines in German which given current descriptions of Shrubb Co. maybe more approptiate than English.

OH-, Sagen kann Sie, durch das frühe Licht der Dämmerung sehen,
Was so stolz wir am letzten Glaenzen der Dämmerung hagelten

6. As a Canuck who is so used to hear O Canada sung in English
and French, it is odd to hear about this latest kerfuffle. I know that Canada is offically bilingual and the US isn't but that aside I have always felt a deeper sense of nationhood and appreciation of Canada whenever I hear the anthem sung in both languages.

7. "Internationale"

was originally written in French, but that didn't stop it from becoming a powerful anthem in Russian and just about any other language into which it has been translated. You can hear it in any of more than 30 languages here:
