"DUers Say the Darndest Things"; DEBUT Edition 5/2/06
As we all know, DUers are just about the smartest, funniest people around...
I see stuff here EVERY DAY that makes me actually laugh out loud.

Some of the things y'all say here
are just simply too good to be forgotten.

So, I thought I would start doing an InstallmentThread
to gather together the DU quips and comments
that tickle my funnybone most,
and immortalize them in TOON form.

Here are a few I saw today, to show you what I mean:

Duer 'RUMMYisFROSTED' posted this idea
in one of our many "Caption this Pic" threads:

DUer and fellow Simpsons-fan 'Tummler' provided the punchline to this one:

And I didn't have anything to do with this last one,
I just thought more people needed to see it.

DUer 'TACE' runs a news site (http://www.worldnewstrust.org/)
and this was the photo accompanying a health story
on today's front page:

So, what do you all think?
Is this a worthy project?
Should I make it a regular thing?

If I start doing this as a series,
I have a few ground rules in mind already:

1: All of these will be copyright-free,
so anyone can swipe them and send them around the Web.

2: Every one will be credited to the DUer who said/inspired it,
because that's kinda the whole point.

3: If anyone objects to my use of their words/ideas,
I'll pull the image immediately, no questions asked.

So that's my idea so far;
feedback and comments will be greatly appreciated!

You are implying every day, but that's an awful lot of work.

11. I certainly didn't mean to imply "every day"!!!! ACK!
It will probably be pretty irregular;
I'm hoping to post at least one thread a week
once I get rolling.

Of course, there's no way to predict how often
I'll come across a real "keeper",
and my available free time for PhotoShoppin'
varies on any given day.

So, I have a vague idea of doing one post a week
containing 5-8 toons, but I can't promise any sort of definite
schedule yet.

16. Once a week sounds about right.
Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:42 PM by Hissyspit
And, of course, you don't necessarily need to have a regular set schedule, although that would be helpful so people would know when to look for it. When I did my African American history post every day for two weeks, it took over my life and was very hard to keep up. But it was great fun, too! I have a feature idea I am working on getting together (I've done it once already) and ideally it would be best once a week, but I don't think I can do that, so I'm thinking every month.

20. As demented flames go, I like this one:
The things you do here at DU might have been viewed as "clever"
back when we were twelve...
Soooo many of your posts are the HTML equivalent
of "farting in class" and then giggling about your own cleverness
in doing so.

But you aren't twelve anymore, and neither are we.

You claim to be 33, but you are still in "6th Grade Class clown' mode...
and you cling to the most utterly ridiculous justifications
for the stupid, childish things you did 2 decades ago.

You are clearly brilliant and witty, and you would have been
a pretty AMAZING force in this modern world if you had
MATURED past the Seventh grade.

I weep for the "you" which might have been, but wasn't.

30. I can already think of one reason why I'd greatly appreciate this:
A number of DUers here are wonderfully quotable. And there are some items here and there about which I'd like more information.

For example: "There goes my Easter ham."

I don't remember who posted it, OR the fellow DUer who posted a comment about it - saying it was the kind of thing that makes you spit your coffee all over your computer. It's funny line all by itself - in the images it provokes, but I'd love to know the backstory.

And by all means, do it as your journal. All that work will thus be much easier to find.

35. "There goes my Easter ham". Yup, "quotable" is the word!
I have absolutely NO idea what that means...
but now I feel compelled to find out!

I agree- it's funny by itself;
it has a memorable rythm and cadence,
and it hints at some sort of MEANING.

It's like it's the catchphrase from some incredibly popular TV show
that I have never seen, or even heard of.

"Is that your final answer?"
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
"There goes my Easter ham."

Yeah, I think you understand what I am gonna try
to do with this 'DUers/darndest things' idea, calimary.

You are one of those "IT-Getters" that Colbert warned us about!

56. I have been thinking about that phrase...
And, since I can't seem to find it using the DU Search function,
I have devised a cunning plan...

I think I'll start using it as a generic catchphrase,
attributed to "unknown Duer", and wait for someone to say
"Hey, I know who said that!".

I'm also debating using it as the TITLE for my journal;
that should get a few more folks asking about it, not?

33. Woo hoo, I'm famous!
Great thread. As a few others have already posted, you should definitely store this thread and subsequent toon threads in a DU Journal.

My Simpsons-related quip was a reply to the instruction "come up with your own Bush response to Colbert's reaming." For those who missed it, there were many other responses:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1083195

And for the uninitiated, the original Simpsons context was a birthday party for Mr. Burns in the classic "Bobo" episode:

Smithers: Here are several fine young men who I'm sure are gonna go far. Ladies and gentlemen, the Ramones!

Burns: Ah, these minstrels will soothe my jangled nerves.

Ramone 1: I'd just like to say this gig sucks!
Ramone 2: Hey, up yours, Springfield.
Ramone 1: One, two, three, four!
      {Abrasive guitar music begins}
      Happy Birthday to you! (Happy Birthday!)
      Happy Birthday to you! (Happy Birthday!)
      Happy Birthday, Burnsey,
      Happy Birthday to you!
Ramone 3: Go to hell, you old bastard.
      {The curtain falls}
Ramone 4: Hey, I think they liked us!

Burns: {toward the Ramones} Have the Rolling Stones killed.

Smithers: Sir, those aren't --

Burns: Do as I say!

34. And I just want to mention...
In that Simpsons episode, the voice-actors
who recorded the Ramones' lines were...

(WAIT for it....)

The RAMONES!

One of my top ten 'Celebrity Cameos' of all time.

It didn't really blow my mind like Prof. Stephen Hawking's
appearance on 'Futurama', but it was still pretty darn funny!

Yeah, I am that someone. The examples you listed are all pictures. Anything else, I am guessing, would be of the sound-bite variety of quote. If we have so many smart and funny people here, let's celebrate by raising the intellectual level, not by dumbing down. There's already too much emphasis on the tabloid ***shocking revelation!!!*** on DU. I'd personally rather see more deep introspection.
